As per chat GPT…
As of May 10, 2025, following Derek Carr’s retirement due to a significant shoulder injury, the New Orleans Saints’ salary cap situation has improved notably. ?
Immediate Cap Space Impact
Before Carr’s retirement, the Saints had approximately $23.1 million in cap space. With Carr stepping away, they gain an additional $30 million in cap relief, bringing their total cap space to around $53 million. ? ?
Dead Money and Future Cap Hits
Carr’s retirement, set to be officially filed after June 1, results in dead money charges of $13.2 million for the 2025 season and $35.6 million for 2026. This is a significant reduction from the potential $69.2 million cap hit in 2026 had he remained on the roster. ? ?
Summary
• Pre-retirement cap space: ~$23.1 million
• Post-retirement cap space: ~$53 million
• 2025 dead money: $13.2 million
• 2026 dead money: $35.6 million ?
Carr’s decision to retire not only alleviates immediate financial pressures but also provides the Saints with greater flexibility for roster moves and long-term planning.

Players at Loomis' door Monday morning...

I can see Loomis trying to pick up some depth at needed positions and rolling the rest over to 2026, hopefully nothing too crazy

Nothing. This was a gift and we’re in the middle of turning our roster over. We’re not a move or two away. Let’s see how all these young guys play this year and if Olave is worth resigning if he can stay healthy. There will be plenty of moves to be made in the future but we don’t have to force it.

If he’s carrying $13M in dead money for 2025, then the immediate cap savings is only $7M. After the restructure, OTC had his cap hit at just over $20M.
Majority of that cap savings would come off of the 2026 books.

Let it roll over to counteract dead cap money

Get some of those void years and $ off the books and into this year.

Do people realize how unselfish is was for Carr to retire?!?! WOW!!
Posted on 5/10/25 at 1:46 pm to RaginAstros
He didn’t want to have surgery/rehab and doesn’t want to play football anymore. How exactly is it unselfish then? I’m not judging him, but he’s doing what he wants to do.

Because he could have pulled a Deshaun Watson and just hung around, been terrible and gotten paid. It was very unselfish. Was not a fan but I appreciate him doing this for sure. He has definitely gone up a few steps in my book.

Deshaun Watson is 29 today, was younger when his saga started. He’s obviously not retiring, it’s not a comparable situation.

Would you have shoulder surgery for 30 million?
