Spot on. Play the young guys and let them go for it instead of just padding Brees stats in meaningless game.

Agreed. I hated we won that meaningless game that helped Tampa. Most people here were happy about it, but now it's draft time and it could hurt us.

Not only would you piss Brees off for the final years of +$27 mil. You'd lose draft picks and have to carry a +$4 mil qb on the roster for the same length of time. All the meantime the saints are strapped for cash. Would make no sense

This is a complex situation, but I do somewhat agree. The most important thing to remember though is that Tampa seemed to intentionally throw this game in the second half. We would've been trying to outlose them if that were how we played.

The problem with the play to lose on our end though is that you NEVER play to lose. It's a way to get players hurt by them not giving their full effort, and it's just not within the makeup of a competitor to do so. However, there was no reason whatsoever we should've had Brees, Colston, Graham, Lewis, Lofton and Ingram in that game. It was completely meaningless, so we absolutely should not have risked the injury to any of our key proven veterans. This was exactly how Brees blew out his shoulder in San Diego. Paeyton should have benched these guys and played to win with their backups. This would've protected our vets, given our 2nd string some valuable experience and put us in a legitimate position to lose without actually trying to lose.

Quitting is a characteristic the coaches and players spend their entire lives fighting against. Easy for the fans to sit here and say throwing a game is the better thing for us but hard for Payton to look into the players eyes come training camp when he essentially tells his players to quit on the season.

Link to Nola.com article citing LaConfora on this.

Why does anyone listen to a guy whose name can be shortened to "La Con"?

The bigger question is how is Tampa going to handle them throwing that last game just so they can have the #1 overall? That can't sit well in a locker room. Clearly they gave up in the second half as the Saints should probably not have won that game.
