Since most articles today are depressing, read Holder's

He basically tried to represent the "mob mentality" fans that are in outrage (probably rightfully so) about his performance so far.
In regards to his arm strength:
a big thing Holder harps on is the fact that a lot of the players that were around for the resilient times like losing your last 3 games in 09 or in 2011 where we had a rough start are now gone. This is scary because, will these young guys have the heart to shape up or will they get swallowed up by defeat?
the most terrifying part of the article are the eerily similar 2 roads we could go down.
basically its very possible to rebound if the team believes and wants to. or we can go down in flames like favre and the packers. its good read.

Good article, thanks. I don't think we're going to get any real answers for a while... even if we blow out the Bucs in the Dome, what will that really prove?

We should be or rather could be 3-1 right now. But the Falcons could be something like 9-7. Coulda, shoulda, woulda, didn't.
The things we need to address we need the team to address on their own in the locker rooms, tape room, and when they're practicing.
Looking at the end of the year after it all, we need to seriously look at saying goodbye to some vets and strike on the draft. We are getting too many holes, and trading up to lose some of those picks aren't worth it. Taking projects early on isn't helping when we need help NOW. Maybe they thought Patrick Robinson was gonna return to his 2011 version, but that hasn't happened yet.

i think this is the meat of Holder's article. can this young team rally? they get these wins at home, but can they realize what it takes to become a strong football team and not let the negatives and despair kill them?
its like we get in a hole and we fall apart. in the past, we would be down by as much as 17 and rally fricking back to win. these younger guys have not shown that heart to fricking fight back. Brees is trying to show it, but one guy does not save a team. we can all look at example from '06, '09, and '11 of times we were down and yet we knew there was hope and we came back to win the game.
the squad we have now has yet to show that. they get whipped and stay down. i have yet to see any sort of tenacity out of the younger group we have. thats where we are lacking. the ability to fight back and not roll over.

In my best Bobby Hebert voice, "well, yeah, but no." I think he's on to something here, but I'm not yet buying that Brees is going to be the guy that transcends it like Elway did. I get that, for better or worse, Brees will retire a Saint. But, I just believe his physical limitations will not allow him to resurrect his career. Don't get me wrong, in my heart, I want it to happen. I was there for the Saints first game ever (Tulane Stadium - John Gilliam returning the opening kickoff for a TD). I partied till the morning in the FQ the night of the Super Bowl. But, until Brees can win on the damn road and not throw a WTF was that int every road game, I just am not going to buy into this is but a bump in the road on the way to better things mantra.

I get that, but its not just this season - the road woes of the Saints, and Brees, started last season. And, the one home game this season (granted a limited sample) was nowhere near the level of prior seasons' home dominance by Brees and the offense. Maybe TB will be the tipping point.

True, but at the same time look at the offense's points on the road. Dallas was a major dud, but that was us being purely 1 dimensional. Before that, 29ppg on the road in the 1st 2 games.
Last year was like..17? Its an improvement, too bad our defense time travelled to 2012.

I think the reports of Brees' demise are greatly exaggerated and premature. He's had a rough stretch, but by no means is there reason to think he's done.
Really, the only loss that really disturbs me is Dallas. And, like most, it's not the loss so much as it is the way the Saints lost.
And it is absolutely spot on to focus on how the new players react. Brees actually alluded to that yesterday. The season isn't lost, but it's going to take a lot of guts, hard work and focus to turn it around.

I agree. Brees has never been a guy who is going to throw it downfield without his feet set on a consistent basis. The pressure coming right up the middle of our line (against our high paid guards) is an issue in terms of moving the ball deep.

I like Holder, and I agree with this. I do think the Brees fears are a bit over-exaggerated.

so is everyone convinced that the reason we havent gone deep that much is because of Drews arm strength? what about players actually being open and getting separation? our receivers havent exactly given drew many opportunities to show his arm strength

Lets not forget the two drops in the endzone/near by Meachem and Morgan.
If those two were completed, we'd probably be 3-1, Brees would be somewhere around 1300 yards (72-73% completion), 8.0y/a, 11TDs-3INTs, and no one would be flippin' shite. Instead, they'd probably be talking about "This is his year"

BlackNGold is right. You know that moment where Brees cocks back and gets ready to unload and you're like oooooh shite HERE WE GO! and then he launches it and you wait to see who's open?
Name one time that camera has panned up field to show a streaking Saints WR five steps ahead of his man... and I mean whether the ball was well-thrown or not... a wide-open man in full stride with a bunch of steps on his coverage.
It just hasn't happened this season.
EDIT: actually it happened twice in a row with Stills against the Cowboys, but before that, I'm hard pressed to name a time.

By the way, given how fast Cooks is, why haven't they tried to use him to blow the roof off the secondary more? I mean maybe they have and I either didn't see it or Brees didn't wind up throwing it his way, but if he's as fast as they say, why haven't they used him in that way more?

i thought this would be the role for Joe Morgan this season but for some reason they insist on playing Meachem instead.

Only thing I can figure is Morgan's speed just didn't come back like they hoped. On that one bomb Brees threw his way (which he dropped), he wasn't really open.
