Sheldon Rankins on track to be ready for Saints training camp

Here’s a big piece of offseason news for New Orleans Saints fans: NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins is working towards a training camp return from surgery last December. This was the third lower-leg injury Rankins has suffered in his first four years in the NFL, and this report suggests an answer for why Rankins has struggled so much with Achilles tendon issues.
Underhill also reported that Rankins deals with Haglund’s Deformity, basically an enlarged bone spur on the heel that puts added tension on the Achilles tendon. That constant irritation results in athletes who are more prone to rupturing that tendon, which Rankins experienced late in the 2018 season. In 2019, the Saints medical staff noticed that his other leg was at heightened risk for the same injury, and recommended he undergo preventative surgery.
Because Rankins chose to go under the knife again so soon rather than after the season, he’s benefiting from both that decision and the abbreviated recovery timeline that follows this procedure (as opposed to a full-on ruptured tendon). It all means that he should be back in action when the Saints meet for training camp, which usually kicks off in late July but may be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s a situation to watch out for.
So what does this mean for Rankins’ role in 2020? If everything goes the way it’s supposed to, he should again play as a co-starter with David Onyemata at the three-technique position, seeing about 30 to 38 snaps each week. That leaves plenty of room for nose tackle Malcom Brown and backups like Shy Tuttle and Mario Edwards to rotate into the game.
But if Rankins suffers another setback or is outplayed in training camp by another lineman, it’s possible he ends up seeing a reduced role. The Saints have enough depth up front to where he shouldn’t start ahead of a better player just because of his draft status or the success he found several years ago. In a contract year and with his injury history, it’s time he stood out for the right reasons.

I agree about what you stated in your last paragraph. I hope that’s true for every position. With that being said, a healthy rank is an absolute force in the inside and there isn’t a dt that can outplay him when he’s on the field. Health is truly the only concern

Yeah I was about ready to say. Rankins was a monster be for the Achilles injury. Would be nice if he could get back into form. I think he had like 8 sacks in 2018 which is phenomenal for a defensive tackle

A healthy rankins is one of the most underrated defensive players in the league.
BUT he’s had some pretty serious injuries, amplified by his size. I hope for the best obviously.

This isn't my opinion. It's an article.

Rankins is very good on the field.

Rankins is a beast and was double teamed most of the time. Huge add if he is back.

So he's playing out the year on the 5th year option, which if I remember correctly, is about 8.5
Going to be interesting how the year goes

Worried about Rank and Davenport. Big guys, multiple lower leg injuries.

But our D line healthy is unfair

Saints have Davenport at a discount for the next few seasons. As long as there is depth, they'll be fine. Hendrickson can play, and if Granderson develops the Saints are going to have a LOADED front.

He's a real risk to not make the team.

This is his make or break year.

I love Rankins, But he will probably play really well for 12-14 games and then be injured when the playoffs roll around.

Dumbest take I’ve seen in years. Tuttle played admirably while Rankins was hurt but he was an obvious step down and plus he’s more of a backup to Brown. Onyemata is good against the run but he’s not very good in pass rush. When Rank went down, our four man rush wasn’t as good. He’s pretty underrated, and a good leader in the locker room. He doesn’t always make splash plays but what DT does? Aaron Donald? Even Suh and Fletcher Cox don’t make splash plays as much anymore but that doesn’t mean they aren’t valuable
He certainly has to stay healthy and contribute this year if he wants another contract. If he doesn’t stay healthy he’s likely gone but this could be a big motivation year for him and his only chance to lock up a long term deal so I expect the best of Rankins to come out.
To think he won’t make the team is just retarded

Onyemata is no slouch in rushing the passer. They are expecting him to be the better of the two but he just hasn’t figured it all out yet. Onyemata is still learning the game but coaches have stated that they expect him to be one of the top defensive tackles in the league when he figures it out. Rankins was great in 2018 so hopefully he returns to form but we probably won’t be able to sign him if he does.

Dude, if Rankins plays like he did 2 years ago, of course he's going to make the team.
But, at this point, that's very much in question. You seem emotional about this, so you better prepare yourself.

Not emotional at all. Looking at things logically. He played well last year before getting hurt. If he gets hurt again he’s likely gone but judged based off him being healthy it’s a no brainer that he not only makes it but starts

Who is they? Got a link? I truly don’t believe a word you say. Sounds like something you want to speak into existence
