How does it work? Can he just sit it out and go where he wants or is it dormant?

He retired so he is not entitled to the payment under the contract; however, under the NFL rules the Saints still possess the rights to him as an NFL coach for the remainder of the contract term whereby he cannot sign a contract with another team without the consent of the Saints. Obviously the Saints would not consent to that signing without compensation in return, hence everyone discussing one or more first round picks by any team who wants to hire him next year.

For some reason, I was thinking an nfl contract just went dormant in retirement. So if he pleases, he can sit out through 2024 and return to whom he pleases

the question is does his final two years keep on counting down each year or does his 2 years get put on hold while he's not coaching.

Not at all. Any team who wants him, especially Dallas, wants to win and won't sit through a wasted dreadful season with a lame duck coach just to get him for cheaper.

2 full seasons could be a huge deal depending on your roster. Let's use the cowboys, dak would be 32 years old at that point.

What are odds he just sits it out until the Saints contract lapses. If we have him signed thru 2024, can he just take a job in 2025 and Saints are owed nothing?

Didn't Gruden go for two 1sts? He is making his rounds around various TV networks and people are absolutely falling in love with him. Read the comments. That will translate to owners. He should be in high demand.
Saints will have his rights through 2024. So they can trade him this offseason or even the next? If I am any team there is no other coach I would want and if trading for him is what it would take then I would offer the best deal.

Absolutely, but I don't think he will wait until then. He seems like he's about ready to coach again.

I'm of the opinion that he won't go to Dallas because Dak is wack.

By contract he owes the Saints two years of choaching whenever he comes back. If he decides to coach for another team, that team owes the Saints whatever compensation requested. So yes, his contract is dormant until he comes out of retirement. Then Saints get what they want or CSP can go back to his couch until he and his preferred team agree to the Loomis terms. In another thread someone mentioned the worries of the Saints taking a bs deal to in favor of Sean to help him out.
