What did they do Lester?

They gave him a 16.9 million extension which confuses you Lester.

Follow the money.

You talk out of both sides of your arse.

Not what I read. I read it as they are keeping their options open, and think he can be a legit starter.

That also doesn't mean they think he can be a BETTER starter than someone like Winston. That's the part that's really up in the air. Signs point to Winston being a better long term option at QB, but he's also only on a one year deal so outside of tagging him that's all he's guaranteed to be here for.

But just to turn this around, maybe they did it this way because they want to keep both in 2021, but were willing to tag Winston at franchise qb money, while willing to only commit about half of that to Hill.

But also up in the air is if Brees comes back. If he plays in 2021, much like Teddy we will have to let Winston go. If Brees retires it frees up the space to potentially tag Winston.

Winston is going from a backup to franchise tag all the while likely riding pine?

Well that's why it's a 1 year deal. Better for all sides to feel it out and see what happens.

If Brees stays in 2021 it won't matter though, which is another reason why the 1 year thing works for everyone.

But we do want to keep Taysom, regardless of if he is the starter, Brees stays, Winston stays, whatever.

He has value beyond just QB, and extending him a year shows that we value both what he can do (and has done), as well as what he MIGHT do at qb.

I think anyone calling this thing any kind of way is calling it premature. Way too many variables at play.

I think the writing is on the wall that this is it imo.

You have any idea of the data on 1st QBs in age 31 season lol

There’s a reason it’s putrid

Quite possible but that was allegedly the case this year too.

I think it will very much come down to what Brady does and how the records stand at season's end. Those records are very important to him. He'll never have the rings but if he gives Brady the records there is no argument (in the media) any more.

You don't even know which way I'm leaning in this, but I'm also not as close minded as the "sides" here seem to be about what can happen. A lot of things can happen in a season.

And any "data" on this would be skewed for a number of reasons (most of all because of the super small sample size).

This isn't a normal case with a normal qb.

Knowing how to maneuver through coach speak doesn’t make one close minded

Only two QBs in history have made their first start 31 & older. It’s not because the sample size is small. It’s because good QBs don’t materialize at thirty frickin one lol

He’s been in league 4 years, not 10. Keep some perspective. His 4 years has been a steady curve.

As Chad said he isn't heading into year 10. Weeden is the only qb I can recall (at least in recent memory) to have gotten as late a start as Taysom.

This isn't a normal situation and can't be looked at through normal means.

Weeden started immediately

A 31 year old starting in his 5th year isn’t a thing. His path is irrelevant. If he were good he’d be playing somewhere

For being the “old man”, he isn’t missing the athleticism. Taysom says his maturity is an asset.

Kurt was also a special case because he played in nfl europe and I think arena league too. In other words he had (lower level) starting experience before getting a shot in the nfl.

But for the record he was 28.
