i love how defensive people get over BACK UP qbs. in all likelihood, griffin will never matter. why not get a draft pick for him?

there was this same weird sense of panic when chase daniel left.

He's young and fits the system, especially coming from Curtis Johnson's Tulane team. He's there to get groomed behind Brees.

so you believe he will be our back up for 5 years and take over for Brees?

why does one need to jump to this type of conclusion? Will Luke McCown take over for Drew Brees?

eta: I seen your boy said "groomed" but still.... maybe griffin can just be a good 2 in the NFL and that's ok. He doesn't need to be a replacement for Drew to be good enough o be our backup.

That's too far to look ahead, but I do see Griffin having a Daniel type role.

the point being debated is whether or not you would take a draft pick for him this year if it was presented.

some want to pass on it because they like Griffin over say a 5th round pick (where we have found gems). my point was, if Griffin is just going to be a back up and then leave the team, why not get something for him?

the answer to this question really is what it is 90% of the time. If the value presented with the player/pick is to the saints liking, they won't be shy to pull the trigger on one. Just like the surveyed pretty hard the crop this year. RGIV won't stop the organization from upgrading that position.

I think my backup qb is slightly greater than a 5th rd pick. Maybe a 4th

so to put it in perspective, you think Griffin is better than Aaron Murray?

Though we are screwed either way if Brees goes down

For the year. That isn't why we need a good backup. We need a good backup in case Brees breaks a rib, gets a high ankle sprain, separates his non-throwing shoulder, or any other injury that causes him to miss 1-4 games.

A decent backup gives a good chance of winning some of the games until Drew gets back, and that might make a huge difference in making the playoffs.

RG4 is our back up. Can he develop to something more? Sure...
Can we fill a need with a player for player trade to help our team today? Yes.
Where and who is the question????

It isn't impossible, but I'd be surprised if we kept 3 QBs. We have an excess of talent at other positions that could require us to keep more than usual, and the situation at FB could require us to keep 2 for the first few weeks or so of the season.
