Week 3 2014
Record 0-2

Offense - 3rd:
869 total yards (434.5 ypg)
29 ppg

Defense - 31st:
892 total yards (446 ypg)
31.5 ppg

Week 3 2015
Record 0-2

Offense - 9th:
731 total yards (365.5 ypg) - On pace for 5,848 yards. Would rank 11th among offenses in 2014.
19 ppg

Defense - 25th:
760 total yards (380 ypg) - On pace for 6,080 yards. Would rank 31st among defenses in 2014.
28.5 ppg

Not exactly a recipe for success.

so in summary, we got a little better in D and a little worse in O, with the same results!

I will never understand why they do this by yardage.

Dree Brees has 86 pass attempts in 2 games and we have been trailing almost the entire time in both...yards are not surprising.

What is surprising is we are tied at 23rd in scoring with Cleveland and San Fran. We are behind everyone in our division in that same category.

I think we got a lot better on D, especially compared to the last 6 games

Exactly. 9th in yards for the offense means nothing. 23rd in points scored is all that matters.

Scoring can be misleading too as its impacted by the defense, field position, # of drives

I like football outsiders advanced metrics for evaluation. Points per drive, yards per drive, etc

Worse results, in my opinion.

At least we had a chance to be 2-0 last year.

This.

Had two games where the Saints did not finish games.

This year...not even close.

Take a look at 2014 and 2015 numbers for 3rd down%.

The defense may rank poorly 18th (41.7%), but the offense is ranked 16th (43.8%).

Sloppy offense has been the cause of 0-2. Defense hasn't been world beaters, but they weren't breaking.

Using PFF's cumulative scores aren't exactly ultra scientific.

But in the first two games last season, the defense's total scores were about -19.
For the whole season, they were about -6.5 average per game.

So far in this season, we're about -9 for the defense, which is an an average of -4.5 per game.

I find this pretty impressive, considering that we lost Galette between the two years.
The defense might not look like it, but it's already playing better than the relatively good part of last year.
And that's with injuries to Lewis, Byrd, and Ellerbe.
I'm feeling hopeful about it going forward.

agreed Hoodoo - but you won't convince the doomsayers of it.

I wasn't too depressed until I heard Pat Kirwan today.

He has the Saints ranked 32nd.

I haven't been this depressed about the Saints this early in the season since the pre Payton era.

I'll take 25th for the defense based on the terrible string of injuries. I mean we started a guy in week two who was eating popcorn and drinking beer on his couch during week one.
