New Orleans has talent at defensive end despite the loss of Marcus Davenport. However, the Saints could look to upgrade the position with a free-agent signing instead of through a thin draft class.

The New Orleans Saints came into the 2022-23 season with one of the deepest and most talented defensive end units in the league. Armed with All-Pro Cameron Jordan, 2018 first-round pick Marcus Davenport, 2021 first-round pick Payton Turner, Carl Granderson, and Tanoh Kpassagnon, the Saints defensive ends created havoc the year before. Jordan, Davenport, Granderson, and Kpassagnon combined for 28.5 sacks, 81 pressures, and 32 tackles for loss in 2021.

The position played well for the most part in 2022, but performed slightly below expectations. Statistical production was down, with the ends combining for 18.5 sacks, 52 pressures, and 37 tackles for loss.

Davenport has departed as a free agent. Jordan is still playing at a high level, but will turn 34 this offseason and is entering his 13th year. Turner is on the verge of a major draft bust.

On paper, New Orleans still has talent at this position. However, they may want to bolster it with a free-agent signing or draft choice.
Notable Free Agent DEs
*age and previous team in parentheses

• Frank Clark (29 - Chiefs)

• Dawuane Smoot (28 - Jaguars)

• Shelby Harris (31 - Seahawks)

• Yannick Ngakoue (27 - Colts)

• William Gholston (31 - Buccaneers)
• Dante Fowler (28 - Cowboys)

• L.J. Collier (27 - Seahawks)

Clark is one of the biggest names remaining on the market at any position. The Chiefs released him because of an escalating salary and slightly declining production. He's coming off a 2022 with five sacks, 24 pressures, and eight tackles for loss while adding 2.5 sacks during Kansas City's Super Bowl run. It's also worth noting that Clark has had legal issues throughout his career, including currently on probation for a gun charge.

An underrated player on the market, Smoot has 22.5 sacks and 80 pressures in the last four years. He had five sacks, 19 pressures, and six tackles for loss in 2022. Disruptive against quarterbacks, he's a bit inconsistent against the run.

Harris was part of the trade that sent QB Russell Wilson to the Broncos last offseason. A bigger defender (6'2", 290-Lbs.), Harris can play inside or on the edge. After 21.5 sacks, 44 QB hits, and 34 tackles for loss in five years with Denver, his statistics dipped a bit with Seattle.

Ngakoue has played for four teams in the last three years after a standout four seasons with Jacksonville to start his career. He's remained a productive pass rusher, evidenced by 19.5 sacks and 63 pressures the last two seasons.
The Saints know Gholston well, having faced him twice a year the last 10 seasons. Gholston isn't an elite pass rusher, he has just 19.5 career sacks, but is still effective if overlooked by blockers. He's also a terrific run defender, an area where the Saints struggled in 2022.

Fowler is still a terrific pass rusher (41 career sacks, 68 QB hits) who can be a liability against the run. Undersized for an end, he'd be most effective as a rotational pass rusher.

Hyder and Collier aren't standout pass rushers, though Hyder is the more accomplished of the two. However, both are strong against the run and bring the added versatility of being able to play inside or outside.

Clark is the free-agent name that most Saints fans are clamoring for, and one that has been linked to New Orleans through some national media rumors. However, Smoot and Gholston top the list of other ends that would make excellent additions to the defensive front.

This year’s draft class looks thin at defensive end, according to scouts. Clemson DE Myles Murphy underachieved in college, but has first-round traits and has been linked to New Orleans in some mock drafts. Notre Dame's Isaiah Foskey is an explosive player that could be another early round possibility.

By the end of 2022, Granderson got most of the edge snaps opposite of Cam Jordan, while Kpassagnon returns to provide strong depth. The key might be Payton Turner, who's done little in his first two seasons.

If New Orleans feels confident about Turner's development going into his third year, then the Saints could still have a deep end rotation. If they don't, then we'll see the team look to upgrade through a free agent signing or a draft choice.

Sad that Turner has been injured so often. He might need one of those hyperbaric coffins, I mean, chambers to help him heal.

They need to call Washington and see what it would take to get Montez Sweat.

After paying Darron Payne all that money, a contract year for Chase Young, and a big contract for Jonathon Allen already on the books, Sweat may be the odd man out

I would imagine Young would be, if they're not thinking emotionally. He's been a huge bust so far and I think he has attitude issues.

Sweat has been a consistent producer. If he would be available via trade it'd definitely be worth discussion pending what it would take to get him plus what anticipated contract we would have to give him

Nathan Shepherd said the Saints showed interest in him last year during free agency, but he returned to the Jets, for whom he totaled six sacks, 33 quarterback hits, 13 tackles for loss

This one tackle we picked up cheap is 1/3 of what all the defensive ends did last year...by himself.

Think that was the total of his entire jets career lol. If he put up those numbers in one year, he woukd be getting paid significantly more.

Here's an article on Ngakoue

Saints Named Best Fit For Yannick Ngakoue In NFL Free Agency
LINK
The New Orleans Saints are already one of the biggest winners of the NFL offseason. Landing free agent quarterback Derek Carr is a huge boost for the franchise, as they are now the likely favorites to win the NFC South.
Heading into the offseason, that isn’t something anyone would have thought about occurring for New Orleans. They were once again in salary cap hell and didn’t have a starting quarterback under contract for 2023. Now that they do, the outlook for the Saints has drastically improved.

This was a team that had they received consistent, solid quarterback play during the 2022 season, likely would have been in the postseason. They ended up finishing the season 7-10 but had a top-10 defense, which certainly bodes well for this upcoming season.

However, there is still some work that could be done for the Saints to reach their potential. While Carr will elevate the offense, the defense does have a few holes to fill. A mass exodus occurred along the defensive line as Marcus Davenport, David Onyemata and Shy Tuttle all departed in free agency.

Nathan Shepard and Khalen Saunders were both signed to help offset those losses, but both are interior defenders. The team still needs someone on the edge to complement Cam Jordan. That is what makes the Saints the best fit in free agency for Yannick Ngakoue.
Ngakoue has become somewhat of a hired hand in the last few seasons around the league. If you need a pass rusher, he is seemingly always available. Since having the franchise tag placed on him during the 2020 offseason by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Ngakoue has changed his address numerous times.
The Jaguars traded him to the Minnesota Vikings that offseason, where he played six games before being traded to the Baltimore Ravens. As a free agent in 2021, he signed a two-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. To make room for Chandler Jones during the 2022 offseason, Ngakoue was traded by the Raiders to the Indianapolis Colts.

Now a free agent again, Ngakoue will be joining his sixth franchise in three years. That is quite a whirlwind, but he has not let it negatively impact his performance on the field. Wherever Ngakoue is playing, he performs.

The Maryland product has recorded at least 8.0 sacks and double-digit quarterback hits in every season of his career. He finds plenty of success getting into the opponent’s backfield, recording at least eight tackles for loss in each season as well.

While not a highly-regarded run defender, Ngakoue certainly has some juice rushing the passer. With $16 million in cap space, the Saints can not only offer him a good sum of money, but the chance to contribute to a playoff team. With a clear need for a pass rusher, the Saints and Ngakoue are a perfect match in free agency.

This guy is not a great run stopper but he is a consistent pass rushing force year in and year out. If we can negotiate a fair price. Also very few missed games due to injury.

Not trying to call your out but that’s his stat line. He had 1.5 sacks last year. And six in his entire jets career.

What point are you trying to make? 1.5 sacks is not 1/3 of 18. Math wasnt your thing in school im guessing?

Yeah, if you watch his tape, you can see him flying into the backfield. He is huge and pretty quick.

Honestly, i think the saints upgraded both tackle positions.

I'm just worried about upgrading end. I would love a trade for a guy like sweat.

They need to hit on a couple guys in the draft the next two years. It's a shame nothey wasted 2 first on davenport and turner. It's almost funny how similar they are in attitude and build for that matter.
