P Russell Erxleben, 11th overall 1979, Saints

Charles Alexander RB from LSU went with the next pick
The only HOF was Kellen Winslow picked at # 13 although I doubt the Saints would have known how to use him back in those days

Actually, the Saints had a pretty good tight end that year named Henry Childs, and he was a relevant part of the offense. The Saints offense in '78-79 was one of the league's best. Defense, especially in '79, was more of an issue.

Freaking Chuck Muncie 1979. Even had a TD pass that year! Dude was Derrick Henry before Derrick Henry.

1981
1st Round
1. George Rodgers (New Orleans Saints)
2. Lawrence Taylor (New York Giants)

2nd Round
29. Russell Gary (New Orleans)
38. Mike Singletary (Chicago Bears)
48. Howie Long (Oakland Raiders)

Can you imagine having LT and Rickey Jackson as our OLB's and Mike Singletary as ILB throughout the 80's

or Howie Long in the interior?

would have been a boss defensive front.

Rogers had a very good rookie season in '81. Rushed for almost 1,700 yards. Had another 1,000-yard season in '83. Rushed for 4.4 yards a carry in each of his first two seasons, and 4.5 in '83.

Just didn't do it long enough. Drugs got him, plus Bum brought in Earl Campbell, too. But if the Saints had drafted Taylor No. 1, maybe they would not have drafted Rickey Jackson later in that draft.

I'm disgusted with the Saints. It's been so many years of incompetence and failure. We had some good years with Brees, but those days are over. It's back to reality and loss after loss.
