Saints D - Focus on the run with Freeman, or the pass with Julio?

On Sunday do we man up Julio and Sanu with Lattimore and Crawley, and load up to stop the run? Or do we play more zone. Curious to see how DA plays it

I’m leaving Latt and Crawley on Islands to free others to stop the run. If they need the help you adjust obviously.

One key for us will be stopping passes/checkdowns out of the backfield. Gonna have to limit Freeman’s production to get this W.

Run with Freeman. Lattimore did just fine against Julio.

What we absolutely can't afford is for Atlanta to hold the ball for long periods of time gashing our defense. Honestly, had they stuck to that more in the last game they probably win much more comfortably.

Agreed. Our defense was gassed by the end. We need to convert third downs on offense and let Ingram and Kamara grind out yards for long drives. Limit the amount of times Freeman is on the field to gash us and then capitalize on mistakes to take the ball.

The worst byproduct of the penalties on the Saints was that they continued drives and kept our D on the field. I agree that we have to keep them from extending drives, no matter what

D. Allen will almost certainly run man with Latt & Crawley while keeping Vaccaro in the box as a "3rd LBer".

Hoping they do not run zone because that has been the Achilles heel to this defense all year with missed assignments, etc.

Hell, I'd be happy with Vaccarro playing a 3rd LB almost exclusively. His coverage ability is poor at best. Not sure why we have seen Bell's minutes limited, he was really playing well in the middle of the season IMO

They need to focus on getting to the QB

1. Lattimore is healthy for this game. I think that leads to him not having any issuesCovering Julio 1 on 1 for the whole game.
2. Kamara should be healthy for the whole game which should help us to control the clock and therefore force Ryan to want to throw the football versus running it with Freeman.

I think our best defense is going to be a good offense. We have to convert 3rd downs. We have to score and put the pressure on Ryan.

I agree. We absolutely cannot have the offense disappear for 2 and half quarters like it sometimes seems to do.

Stop the run and rush the passer. Julio will get some catches and yards, just don’t let the other guys kill you.

IMO

He's been nothing but average this year. I agree if we can pressure him we should get some turnovers

Won't happen with Kamara playing IMO.

We marched right down the field on our first possession with him in.

Unfortunately, we can't due to personnel. Without Okafor & Hendrickson, we're forced to play Rankins at DE. We should be able to get a decent pass rush in obvious passing situations when Rankins slides inside, Davison exits the game, & Kikaha comes into the game at DE.

Fortunately, Rankins at DE (to go along with our DT's) actually makes our run defense pretty legit. We're selling out to stop the run, but it's our best option. Robertson & Te'o are legit against the run as well (so is Bell at SS).

I assume we have Lattimore & Crawley on the outside (on an island), & PJ covers the slot.

Basically I think we have to shut down their run, man up on their WR's, & hope for the best in regards to a pass rush. Hopefully either Cam has a monster game, or we get to the QB with the blitz. We might not have much luck besides those 2 possibilities (I guess Kikaha is our only other hope).

He’s PFF’s no.2 WR. That prick of a QB and OC haven’t been targeting him as much usual.

It will be key to establish our running game and eat up the clock. As hobbled as our def. is we need to keep the
Atlanta off. off the field as much as possible.
