Underwhelmed as a UDFA out of Rutgers in 2015 as well as in 2016 camp. However, he was an underrated contributor last season as a 4th receiver.

2015 - 30, 445, 2 TD
2016 - 26, 281, 3 TD

Vast improvement made last year. Not underwhelming at all considering he is playing in such a prolific offense and with a Hall of Fame QB.

Also Ginn only had 5 last year but everyone still harps on the 10 the year before that (which, iirc, was the most he had in a year by maybe 3). Will he drop a few? Definitely, but I'd be surprised if he hits 10 again.

Ginn was a top 10 pick and definitely has skills. Did he have a reputation for drops before he played with Cam? With Cam it seems like every pass is just a fastball with very little touch. I think he will benefit tremendously catching passes from an all time passer like Brees.

It's more lack of focus looking it all the way in. He drops plenty of lobs, probably more than any other type of pass.

Cam Newton has been one of the better comp % on throws downfield since he came into the league. His team was 2nd worst in failed catches last year, costing him nearly 1k in passing yards

These arent hard catches. Ginn has literally lost games for them.

The second clip shows exactly what I'm talking about. He looks the ball in, but not all the way into his hands. That brief lapse where he doesn't look it all the way into his hands is what causes his drop issues.

That said he hasn't been near the league lead year in and year out. He had one bad year recently, and I think another pretty bad year prior to Car, but it is overstated.

I expect 4-8 drops this year and we'll have to live and die on it because the things he does well makes up for the majority of them.

There's other things like body catching and alligator arms. He doesn't seem to have those issues.

At the risk of side tracking this thread, Dural has made one play all camp and Crawley has the most PBUs in camp. So, probably not.

Getting back on track.

Bleacher Report on Coleman before 2014 draft.

quote:

Hands are a question mark, but many of his drops came on balls that were off the mark that he failed to properly adjust to. Seemed to frequently not be on the same page as his quarterbacks in terms of timing and depth of routes, but it's difficult to assign blame to the receiver or quarterback without knowing the exact design of the play. Surprisingly inefficient against press coverage. He has the strength to fight off press coverage, but lacks the burst to pull away when he wins the physical battle. Speed is adequate, but he's slow off the snap and takes quite a few steps to really get moving. Has the size to break tackles, but otherwise doesn't provide much of a threat after the catch. Lacks the speed and athleticism to lose defensive backs in man coverage. Every reception is contested because he can't break free from man coverage. Considering his size, his catch radius is relatively small due to a lack of agility in short bursts. Struggles to adjust to poorly placed balls on shorter routes, which limits his effectiveness as a possession receiver. Too hesitant as a blocker. Needs to realize he has the size to be a dominant blocker, even without perfect technique, and become more aggressive.

Some of these are exactly what some posters here were saying. However the bold stuff can be coached. It seems as if he has worked on this, almost exactly, as adjustments, burst, and getting off press have been highlights of his camp this year.

It might blow the mind of saintards worldwide but IT IS POSSIBLE for players to improve 2-3-4 years in.
Yes, it is and Robert Meachem and Donte Stallworth are 2 that come to mind. But I said to my self that this season should be Coleman's coming out party after he scorched some DB on a bomb from Brees. He's been there long enough now not to dominate this season with the size he has.

also, I think Onyemata will develop into an animal, that dude is strong.

Poor play during the regular season has earned him his current reputation.

I am sure this is Coleman's make or break season. It took 3 seasons working extra with Colston and others for Meachum to finally come around. I hope he has a great camp because we can certainly use his size to our advantage.

Go back and look at his utube highlights, he is making the JG TD catches we need. I expect that to increase this year.

At least we fixed that, he routinely mauls people.

He will let you down when you need a sure thing. I don't care how "beastly" he looks. His inconsistent hands are always going to be his demise. Ginn, although a better WR, has the same issues.

Guys like him get multiple shots because he's a physically gifted player. His lone fault is concentration/hands and why he wasn't drafted at all.
