A versatile player made his mark over the weekend in the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp and is set to be rewarded for his efforts.

The Saints are expected Monday to sign Drew Iddings as a guard, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The 6-foot-6, 290-pound Iddings showed up to rookie minicamp as a defensive end on a tryout basis.

But the waiving of undrafted free agent Collin Buchanan on the first day of camp prompted the Saints to move Iddings to right guard, where he apparently impressed enough to warrant a contract despite never playing on the offensive line.

Iddings originally entered the league in 2016 out of South Dakota as an undrafted free agent with the Oakland Raiders, but was waived before the start of the regular season.

While playing his natural position on defense in college, Iddings appeared in 46 games and totaled 149 tackles (76 solo) and eight sacks. He also recorded a 4.75 40-yard dash time during his Pro Day workout.

Iddings will become the third known player to earn a contract following a successful tryout during the three-day rookie minicamp.

Offensive lineman Khalif Barnes and tight end Clay Harbor are also scheduled to sign deals Monday.

WTF? nfl.com had Buchanan as our highest rated udfa and the 3rd highest rated udfa of all. There's got to be some behind-the-scenes issue there.

Kid didn't want to play, which is why he likely went undrafted to begin with.

Doesn't hurt to talk him into coming to camp to see if he wanted to give it a go, but ultimately he didn't.

So we're going to have a new long snapper this year?

It's looking that way.

I always thought Harbor looked like he should have had bigger numbers. Not a bad add to competition at the #3-4 TE roster spots. I'd be less surprised if he made the roster than Barnes.

Barnes impressed with the weight loss but hard to see him beyond being on speed dial, in case.

Okay, that makes sense. I knew there had to be something other than just ability for him to get cut so early. Hey, God bless him. He wants to gt on with his life's work. Nothing wrong with that.

The New Orleans Saints announced today that they have signed tackle Khalif Barnes, running back Trey Edmunds, tight end Clay Harbor, guard Drew Iddings and guard Josh Leribeus, waived wide receiver Ahmad Fulwood, cornerback Anthony Gaitor, tackle Andrew Lauderdale and center/guard Clint Van Horn and terminated the contract of S Shiloh Keo following the club’s rookie minicamp. The announcements were made by Saints’ Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis.

Not 100% up to date (so give or take half a mil at most; more likely on the give side), but once the rookies are signed and Byrd comes off we will have just over $10 mil in space.

Accounting for the PS and 52nd and 53rd players that will be right around $9 mil come the regular season.

Looking into next year, we sit at about $37.6 mil under. If Brees hits FA that drops to about $25.6 mil, so it's imperative to carry over as much of that $9 mil as possible. If we carry over say $7.4 mil (due to signings for injuries and whatnot) we'll sit at $33 mil under.

Our biggest FAs would be Brees, Vaccaro, and Ellerbe. Everyone else should be $2 mil or under (about half a mil less on the cap because we have 57 guys already signed next year).

If we get Brees extended before FA that gives us another $12 mil to play with, taking it to $45 mil under. If we expect to retain Brees that is the route we must go. It'll be a lot harder to add pieces and sign our other guys if Brees hits FA.

thats not even including potential cuts this year:
Ellerbe: 2.5mil
Hill: 1.02mil
Hooman: 1.67mil
Te'o: 1.19mil
(of course not including the money it'll take to replace them)

and next year:
Fleener: 3.2mil
Strief: 4.0mil
Hill: 2.0mil
Anthony: 1.5mil
Stupar: 1.725mil
Robertson: 1.6mil
Banjo: 1.7mil
Kikaha: 1.15mil

Apparently we didn't miss out much on Charles Walker.

Eagles waived/injured DT Charles Walker with a knee injury.
Walker will land on injured reserve if he goes unclaimed, and he will likely be released with an injury settlement at some point. An UDFA out of Oklahoma, Walker entered the league with production, athletic, and commitment concerns after quitting football last season, and now he is adding a knee injury to that resume.

Holy shite we may be in play for some more serious upgrades next year.

Don't rule out a Jimmy Graham homecoming if Lord Brees demands it.
