Roby vs Arrington vs Fayson

It's going to be interesting to see the competition for the fifth WR spot develop.
Roby's been the incumbent the last several years and our gunner on special teams. But he appears to be slowing down.
Arrington has been on the PS the last 3 years but is no longer eligible. He doesn't play on ST so that hurts him. This is his year to break through or he might be out.
From what I have been hearing Fayson might be the surprise of this camp. Unfortunately, he may not have enough time to develop to make the final roster.
I would like to see Arrington's hard work and patience pay off and become that 5th receiver. That would mean that Roby would likely be out. In that case someone, likely Sproles, would have to take over KO return duties.
Also would need a gunner to replace him. Unless Fayson blows up in the preseason, it's likely he goes to PS.
What do yall say?

I second all that and have NO idea what to say about that situation. I think there might secretly be a Meachem/Arrington battle going on that we are unaware of.

I think Roby is definitely gone.
SP has brought in so many special teams players, Roby's gunner role isn't enough to make the roster, especially now that Sproles & others have KO capabilties.
I don't think Arrington is a lock to make the team either, especially with Fayson hot on his heels. I say this because I think the Saints may still only keep 5 WR's due to the emerging thought that the Saints may be looking to play more 3-4 schemes/packages, and may keep an extra defender on the roster, say at LB, instead of at WR. (insert evidence: LB Matt Roth is currently being looked at by the Saints.)

Roby's job is in serious danger IMHO.
KR isn't as important as it used to be due to the new kickoff rules designed to increase touchbacks.
He probably won't pick up PR duties because Sproiles will have the inside track on that job and, failing that, Moore can do it.
If he can be replaced as a gunner on ST, then he'll no longer be useful to the team because he's not going to hit the field as a WR.
I'm less sure what to do with Arrington vs. Fayson.
In order for Fayson to make the main roster, I'd think he would have to play lights-out at WR and be a major contributor on ST such as replacing Roby as a gunner.
Arrington, due to his time in the system, likely will stick around as a backup since the team could lose Henderson, Meachem, and Colston next offseason.

Well, he definitely did not have a good year last year. The coaches have been saying this during offseason. I like Roby. But I think that we can do better with Sproles or somebody else with more speed.

I hear Joseph Morgan is looking good too.

I think that Patrick is the new gunner. If Fayson/Morgan can be a big time SP player and KR, then one of them might take the job from Roby..less money

There is a lot of good points being made in this thread.
LSUFREEK makes a good point about us playing more 3-4, along with our base 4-3, nickel, dime, 4-6, jumbo run defense, and whatever other exotic packages that Greg Williams implements the Saints might be keeping certain defenders that play in certain schemes only and not majority of the snaps guys.
And Teke184 makes a good point about the new kick-off rules limiting kick returns.
That being said I still think Roby's spot will be made on kick returns. I'm thinking (and hoping) that with Loomis's attention to special teams that we will have a few gunners on Special teams. Patrick Robinson, Johnny Patrick, Nate Bussey, the three safetys( Oliver, Deandre, and the one in the trade with Miami), Will Hering, Korey Hall. As well as returning guys like Pierson, Riess, Dunbar, etc. As well as undrafted rookies that can make a name for themselves.
But we didn't add any true return men besides Sproles. We see what Devery and Meachem can't do. Plus I don't think Pierre will be back there. So my point is that if Sproles doesn't look dynamic or if he were to happen to get injured(knock on wood) would Roby be the only other choice?
If he looks like he lost a step or another youngster shows they can handle return duties I don't think being a good gunner will be enough to hold down his spot

teke 184,
Were you a Teke at LSU or somewhere else?
(I'm Beta Phi 409).

I wouldn't be surprised if Devery got cut and we kept Arrington and the rookie. Devery's contract is a problem for someone who slipped last year.

Lulz.
Meachem has been running with the ones from what I've heard, opposite Colston.

I think Roby will be gone. Fayson won't make the team this year.
Question is, Can we fine a better WR than Arrington in free agency after the roster cuts.

Southern Miss (Pi Psi 184), though I'd dropped by the Beta Phi house a time or two over the years and had run into some of their guys at LLT functions.
