Just speculation. I know that for a fact that some people on airline felt that Payton while incredibly talented as a coach had become completely unmanageable.
My theory is far fetched but I could foresee a situation where she openly disagreed with Tom and expressed it in such a way that pissed him off or was the last straw among a number of other issues

IDK man. I don't think it's such a stretch. I remember when Patyon suspension first came down, and the NFL's press release was read, I was afraid that CSP might get canned due to the bad publicity. I thought it would be a stupid move, but I was still afraid it might happen.
Rita hasn't been doing this as long as Tom, so she could be more prone to knee-jerk-reactions than Tom.
