Wester was behind the mic for two of the most memorable plays in Saints history — John Gilliam’s kickoff return for a touchdown in the team’s first game against the Los Angeles Rams in 1967 and Tom Dempsey’s then-NFL record 63-yard field goal to give the Saints a 19-17 victory against the Detroit Lions in 1970.

I knew Al. I worked at WNOE as an assistant producer for awhile and he did the sports on our show. Very old school in every way; a helluva guy in real life.

RIP Al.

RIP. He's a "bless his heart" kind of guy. Witnessed maybe the worst football in NFL history, give or take a 63-yard field goal.

He was fortunate in that he stopped doing Saints play-by-play after the ‘70 season.

The Saints from ‘71 through ‘77 were absolutely abysmal.

The only person who might have him beat was Jack Cristil (Miss State announcer from ‘53-‘11).

He had to sit through 636 Football games and 1,538 Basketball games.

Mostly terrible State teams during his tenure there.

Loved to listen to Al Wester call a game . Great voice! I didn’t know his home was New Orleans. I used to listen to notre dame football with Westor.

Kudos to the mention of Cristil. A Mississippi State institution. Wrap it in maroon and white!
