Rick Leonard and the other OT's still on the board

It's going to be interesting to see how Rick Leonard pans out. There were 3 pretty highly rated OT's on the board when the Saints took him: Will Richardson, Tyrell Crosby, and Jamarco Jones. Interestingly, all three are about the same size, 6'5 and in the 310-320 range. Obviously Leonard has more length at 6'7. Will Richardson went two picks after Leonard to the Jags. I read that some teams took Richardson off their boards completely because of disciplinary/character issues. The Saints may have been one of those teams. Crosby is a beast and some mocks had him a a late 1st-early 2nd rounder as recently as a month or so ago. But there are questions about whether or not he can stay at OT in the NFL and I notice that Detroit, who took him in round 5, lists him as a OG on their website. Jones went at the end of round 5 to Seattle. I was hoping the Saints would take Crosby. I think he'll be a good swing man in the NFL. Obviously the Saints liked Leonard better. Time will tell if the pick was a major reach or if the Saints have a diamond in the rough.

Crosby could have and would have been moved to guard probably where he would be a solid backup to the starters, but Leonard just seemed like a off bad pick imo.

I fear you are correct. This looks like shades of Tavin Rooks, except we spent a 4th rounder this time, not a 6th rounder. I hope we're wrong.

PFF just listed Jamarco Jones as a Day 3 steal. I hadn't heard of him, but they rattled off some metrics that made him sound like a 2nd rounder.
Speaking of Day 3 gems, they gushed over Boston Scott as one of their favorite steals.

I'm just patiently waiting to see how good he'll be. I'm not really judging the pick as good or bad just yet.

Good thing is he will have at least two seasons to develop.

There was a lot of similar talk when we drafted Onyemata, I think also in the fourth round. He's turned into a very solid rotational player at DT. If Leonard takes the same career trajectory on the oline its a very solid pick

quote:
Crosby is a big-bodied tackle prospect with a strong anchor and a mean streak as a run blocker. He was poised for a great junior year before injuries caused him to miss all but three games. He missed the opener due to injury, started the next two games at left tackle but suffered a broken left foot. Crosby started 12 of 13 games played in 2015 at right tackle, one year after stepping into the starting lineup because of injuries in 2014. Crosby (a top-40 tackle recruit from Henderson, Nevada) started nine games that year, including each of the final six at left and right tackle, while playing in all of the Ducks' 15 contests.

He has an extensive injury history. One thing about all of our prospects is they look to have pretty clean injury histories. Maybe we were burned too many times and wanted a clean injury sheet for our prospects.

Crosby had concussion issues causing his drop

The fact of the matter is none of us were out there scouting Leonard. The online draftniks didn’t run him through drills, talk to him, talk to his coaches, etc.
Scouting goes a lot deeper than watching some film.
They obviously feel like he has the size and talent to be molded into a great backup or spot starter.
I said yesterday that this pick does reek a bit of hubris and that’s true. But it’s not necessarily a bad thing. They are confident their coaching will transform him. We will see.

As quoted, he had many more injuries aside from a concussion. Regardless, without knowing for sure that it was a factor in the Saints and other teams passing on him, hard to ignore the injury history, particularly given our past experiences with drafting players with them.
