I think rex has the ability to be a good hc. I think he just put too much faith in sanchez and never brought in serious competition at the qb spot as a backup plan. when/if he gets a second chance, I think he will do much better.

I think Rex is a good coach. He just can't manage the PR aspects of the position. Spags has never really done anything special. His defenses in St. Louis were always middle of the pack, and his unit in NY those two years was statistically awful, outside of the aggressive game they played against NE, but every dog has its day.

Moral: I wouldn't really care either way if we fired Steve and went after a guy whose more proven(on the defensive side of the ball, strictly)in Ryan.

Like the OP said, the Saints have no where to go but up.

GatorHater, you may have a point.

But consider this: replacing a DC after only one season is highly unusual. Not many front offices in the NFL would do this.

You have a point, but, I'm not sure that the situation is extreme enough to warrant this radical and unusual action of firing Spags after only one season.

If Sean Payton returns soon, he can eval the situation and make the call.

nothing like just completely making shite up.

His statistically awful defense in NY finished #7 then #5 in the 2 years he coached there in total defense. and yes, he did hold one of the best offenses ever to 14 points in the Super Bowl

He's given pretty high praise for the improvement he made with the STL D when you consider how little talent he had to work with. Ya gotta look past stats only in the NFL. The Bucs have a top run defense statistically this year. That isn't cuz they are so good. It's cuz they are so dreadful in pass D that no one has to even try and run on them. Spags stats anyway...

2008 pre Spags Haslett D- Pts 31st, Yds 28th, 30 sacks

2009 Spags- Pts 31st, Yds 29th, 25 sacks

2010 Spags- Pts 12th, Yds 19th, 42 sacks

2011 Spags- Pts 26th, Yds 22nd, 39 sacks

He's credited with developing Chris Long. 4 sacks before Spags. Under him he went 5, 8.5, & 13 sacks. Laurinaitis as a 2nd Rd pick turned into an immediate high impact player under him.

A new DC, huh?

I think I might start a new rumor.
Dallas wants Spags.
Spags is gone when they season ends.
I'll be just as popular as Jeff!

What in the frick are you talking about? Ryan is a great head coach. Even Sean Payton couldn't win with that idiot, Sanchez. Let alone, why would the Saints replace Spags when aside from all the bounty crap, it was known that it would take a season or so to really get his schemes down?

Seriously, delete this topic and think long and hard before posting again.

Let's face it, this dude's getting canned at the end of the year. He's an awful head coach, but one of the leagues best defensive minds. What do you think would be the better option: Wait and see if Spags can surround himself with the talent necessary to maybe make this struggling defense work, or go after Ryan in the off-season and cut our loses?

The players are FINALLY starting to get the hang of the Spags' way and you want to screw it all up by canning Spags and getting Rex Ryan?.... And doesn't Ryan use the 3-4 defense?
