Obviously we need/must resign Brees and for the love of god get him a real tight end.

That said, how would you do it?

He cannot be franchise tagged.

He CAN be transition tagged.

I hope that both sides come up with a fair and reasonable 3 year deal before free agency so we can concentrate on filling the holes we have.

If no deal is reached, I personally think you lose him if you go with the transition tag. A team like Jacksonville or Miami can structure the deal in a way that we cant match.

Dear Drew, please please please just get a deal done early for ONCE. Whatever it is, just get it done so we can concentrate on other team needs and the draft.

He will be back but for purposes of negotiation the process will be very public and will appear to be very tense and there will be lots of bad rumors about him leaving and bad feelings between him and the organization. In short, this board is going to freak the frick out.... and then he'll sign

We're about to find out how serious Drew is about going out with another ring.

He gone. Going to go to Atlanta and win them a Super Bowl. The melt will make last night look like child’s play.

Our good season this year is good leverage I think, he will be inclined to perhaps not push for max money since he doesn't have to carry the team anymore

A team like Jacksonville

In my opinion, Jacksonville is the most loaded team in the NFL other than at QB. If he makes it to FA it will be hard for him to resist whatever they are able to offer. So I agree w/ your assessment - WE HAVE to agree to a deal before FA

When it comes to his contract Drew seems pretty cold blooded. I think with what happened in San Diego he wants to get as much as possible while he can.

Will Drew put the team first or his selfish self first during his contract negotiations??
Saints should offer a series of One year contracts around 24 million per year.

While I am quite sure that won’t hapen I didn’t realize Atlanta can cut Ryan for like 2.5 in dead cap.

They won’t. But wow.

have no problem resigning him , but not for $28m & four years
as jim finks said - better to let him go one year too early, then year too late
long term contract ties up the money we could pay for other players

Taking the emotion of drew being my most favorite saint ever.

Now the analysis

His noodle arm will be worse next year. He made a bunch of mistakes in the first half yesterday. Still he brought the team back with help from the D and special teams. There's a few QB's available and they are young. This could be a chance to give the young team a real future. I hate saying it, but it's real.

Finally, does he want 25 million a year?

He needs to take a TB12 14 million dollar cap hit and let Mickey get Jimmy and Jarvis.

If he wants 25 mil I don’t know how we do that without a really long deal. We just don’t have a ton of years to stretch the cap hit like you do with younger players on big deals

Below are the 2017 contract numbers for QBs.

Player Salary Cap Value Cash Spent
Joe Flacco $24,550,000 $6,000,000
Carson Palmer $24,125,000 $17,500,000
Kirk Cousins $23,943,600 $23,943,600
Matt Ryan $23,750,000 $15,750,000
Aaron Rodgers $20,300,000 $13,650,000
Ryan Tannehill $20,300,000 $18,000,000
Cam Newton $20,166,000 $13,660,000
Eli Manning $19,700,000 $13,500,000
Andrew Luck $19,400,000 $13,000,000
Drew Brees $19,000,000 $13,000,000
Ben Roethlisberger $18,200,000 $12,000,000
Philip Rivers $18,000,000 $14,000,000
Sam Bradford $18,000,000 $18,000,000
Alex Smith $16,900,000 $13,300,000
Matt Stafford $16,500,000 $51,000,000
Derek Carr $15,731,691 $25,175,000
Andy Dalton $15,700,000 $13,300,000
Russell Wilson $14,626,470 $12,600,000

Based on market value, age, team needs, etc. I’d say between $19-22M is fair market value. People on here underrate Brees and only see his faults. He’s still a top 5 QB. Without him, we are the Texans or Bengals or 49ers.

See, you dodged. There is no one. The only guys available who are going to be any good are going to cost just as much money or more.

Finks aside.... we got rid of Sproles two years early and this board melted down for two straight seasons every time Sproles made a nice play. Imagine what it would be like watching JAX win a couple rings with Brees while we labor to 2-14 under some kid who was definitely going to be the next Tom Brady the day we traded up to get him
