The Saints are in offseason mode, and there will be a lot of decisions to make regardless of whether Sean Payton lands on the trade market (if he does).

There are 22 players with contracts set to end, 18 of whom are entering unrestricted free agency. On Inside Black & Gold this week, we broke down which players should be prioritized heading into the 2023 season, with only two landing in the category of "must-sign."
IMPENDING FREE AGENTS

RESTRICTED

- WR Marquez Callaway (24)

- DT Albert Huggins (25)

- TE Juwan Johnson (26)

- LB Chase Hansen (29)

UNRESTRICTED

ordered by age)

- OL Ethan Greenidge (25)

- WR/KR Deonte Harty (25)

- DE Marcus Davenport (26)

- S J.T. Gray (26)

- DE Kentavius Street (26)

- DT Shy Tuttle (27)

- S Justin Evans (27)

- LB Kaden Elliss (27)

- DE Tanoh Kpassagnon (28)

- RB Dwayne Washington (28)

- CB/S P.J. Williams (29)

- DT David Onyemata (30)

- WR Jarvis Landry (30)

- RB David Johnson (31)

- S Daniel Sorenson (32)

- RB Mark Ingran (33)

- QB Andy Dalton (35)
So who should be brought back and who should be shown the door? We broke that down on this week's Inside Black & Gold, with players put into categories of: let them walk, test the market, 1-year minimum offers, must-sign/match players. Here's how that broke down...

- Let them walk: Harty, Ingram, Landry, Roby, Kpassagnon, Johnson

- Test the market (re-sign if reasonable): Davenport, Onyemata

- 1-year minimums: Greenidge, Street, Evans, Washington, Williams, Tuttle, Sorenson; Dalton

- Must-sign: Elliss, Gray

Pretty good podcast linked to this but it's long.

Davenport gonna get a contract fairly quick. He has potential, just can't stay on the field. It just depends on if someone will grossly overpay. I'd like to see Juwan, Ellis, Tuttle, onyemata, Davenport, Evans, gray and street back. The rest can all go.

One of the few bright spots on the season, and you’re gonna say let Juwan walk?

As another poster pointed out, how do you not bring back Juwan; especially as a RFA

I think Landry & Kpassagnon should be moved to Test the market (re-sign if reasonable) and Onyemata needs to be brought back.

Also think Dalton should be one a multi-year deal as he could be a valuable vet backup. Need some consistency in the QB room even if we’re going w a new starter

I assume they meant David Johnson not Juwan.

Notice none of the RFAs are categorized.

Sign nobody. No more fat contracts. Get rid of them all and rebuild starting by trading anyone with talent away. Load up on draft picks and get young. Get rid of the retard Allen. When you're young from the draft and have something, then you can approach a big coach. You're going to win a SB if you hit cheap contracts in the draft with stars because then you can dump in free agency to get impact players to fill the holes.

An aging team full of overpaid players ain't getting you anywhere. Saints have a terrible habit of holding onto players too long and not getting rid of them for maximum value. Guys like Lattimore you can make bank on them and he's not consistent enough and we're not going to be winning enough to get anything out of his play. Trade him while he has value. Get rid of Thomas, etc. anyone with value. Kamara - bye thank you for your service man. Anyone with a big contract, has value, and their performance is likely going to decline moving forward or their performance is not going to matter.

This team, FO, and coaching staff is fricking atrocious. Anyone can see it's already a rebuild now except the FO and the retard look on the sidelines helming the team.

At the very least this gives you your only shot at getting a franchise QB in the draft because your front office is too fricking stupid to hold onto picks instead of getting arse raped in trades for mediocre players so at least now we can actually use those traded picks to move up for a franchise QB.

I'm a fan of let anyone walk unless it's positive value into the future. If it's not going to be positive value in 2 years, than goodbye. There's no one "must sign" on the entire team unless we get a steal of a contract, maybe keep a 27 yo at fair market value like Kaden Ellis.

As long as we have a inept OC and a turnstile QB, we should just be pushing value into the future until we have a chance to compete for more than maybe .500 and a chance to maybe sneak into wildcards spots. Im not even a fan of keeping the defense loaded, we are sticking with a head coach purely for his defensive coordinatorship, we need to reset and get the offense to a point where they can at least score more than 0 points in the 2nd half when we need it, before we worry about anything else.

You don't give fat contracts in a rebuild dumbass. The only time you give those out is if you hit gold in the draft with a YOUNG player who you know is not going to decline in performance until they hit past their peak athletic prime ceiling. Handing big fat contracts out to guys like Peat is why you're in the predicament you're in now.

You get good through the draft THEN you give fat contracts out in free agency and retaining your roster. You don't resign guys like Davenport who will want too much and can barely get on the field. You only take risks on bad contracts when you know your roster can sustain it. If you're going to win a SB you absolutely must have young cheap talent to supplement the guys eating the cap up. It's that simple. What's the point giving guys like Davenport contracts now? We're not winning anything anytime soon so you need to free up as much cap space for the future as possible to get the wheels moving when you are ready to start filling in the gaps.

That's going to happen when Saints are out of cap hell, hired a coach they're ready to back, and have draft picks for a franchise QB. It's not a hard concept to understand. If you want a franchise QB Saints are going to have to get the draft capital so that means offloading all your talent off the roster that isn't young and cheap. There's no reason to keep guys like Kamara around anymore. He's out of his athletic prime despite being productive and is inn that grey area where you should start seeing his RB production significantly decline. He still has value so get rid of him.
