PFT conspiracy theory: Jerry Jones will make another run at Payton

In one breath, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones insists that coach Jason Garrett would have had five job offers if he’d been available two weeks ago. In the next breath, Jones refuses to rule out that Garrett will be available two weeks from now.
So what’s going on? We’ve got an idea. And it involves the head coach of a team that is still playing.
Here’s what Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas when asked to commit to the 2019 return of his head coach, with emphasis added: “Why would I put some kind of statement out that says this is what we’re going to do when we might have an opportunity here next week? This is the time when these things are thought about. This is the time when they are chewed on. This is when you may see an opportunity next week that you didn’t know existed this week in the area of personnel or in the area of coaching. And I’m not trying to be cute here. I’m just saying that one of the advantages that we have is that we can operate with that kind of flexibility.”
So what opportunity could arise next week? Short of the cloning of Sean McVay or the reanimation of Vince Lombardi, the universe of potential coaches is set. The universe of available coaches, however, will soon grow.
After Sunday, an AFC finalist and an NFC finalist will lose. Next week, coaches will be available, in theory, who aren’t available now.
And given that a month of Sunday Splash! reports has speculated on Saints coach Sean Payton moving on and, more specifically, linked him to the Cowboys, it’s fair to consider Jones’ comments through that lens. Is Jones suggesting that, if the Saints lose, the Cowboys would explore upgrading from Jason Garrett to Sean Payton?
Despite the practical complications that arise when trying to fire one coach and hire another (Rooney Rule compliance would become an obvious issue), Jerry Jones tends to do whatever Jerry Jones wants to do. He has said he’d write a huge check if it would guarantee a Super Bowl win, and whether those huge checks are to the league for violating the Rooney Rule, to Payton to lure him to town, or both, Jones’ cryptic yet loaded comments from Tuesday suggest that he’s thinking about making a run at hiring Payton.
Of course, Payton has said or done nothing to suggest an inclination to leave the Saints. But this isn’t about Payton; it’s about Jones. If Jones has decided that he’s willing to blow the coaching compensation curve in order to make it happen (and to give up draft picks to get Payton from the Saints), nothing stops Jones from at least trying.
And that may be the only way to properly comprehend the things that Jones had to say on Tuesday when talking about his current head coach.

They don't even have a 1st rd pick.

If I were to consider any of this as truth. Which I don’t. If SP does happen to make it to/or win the Super Bowl. How long does it take y’all to turn on him for being the Cowboys coach. And if this rumor is true it probably means that Drew is leaving or retiring.

If he leaves the Saints and goes to the Cowboys it wouldn’t be “turning on him”. He’d be dead to me

This is nuts. I think it’s more likely Jerry is talking about some assistant coach who might become available. Josh McDaniel maybe?

McVay, not Payton.
I agree. He's young and probably would jump at the chance to double his salary, no matter who's the boss.

Oh look, bullshite speculation about our team with 0 credence whatsoever. I’ve never seen some shite like this before...

I don't think McVay is going to leave his rockstar status as a young guy in LA. I think it's more Josh McDaniels or someone actually attainable. PFT just trying to get some clicks.

I thought we were past this crap. This is just a splash article for hits. Payton isn't the type of coach to allow meddling in his game planning like Jerry Jones likes to do. Jones needs a puppet he can control. Payton isn't that puppet. This article is shite.

I'm so tired of this pathetic media blitz the cowboys are trying this week. Always have to stay in the media when they suck arse.

Is it that time of year again already?

This stuff used to bother me, then I finally realized it's all BS. This year is especially pathetic as (1) Payton is under contract through 2020 and (2) the Cowboys have no draft pick to trade to the Saints for compensation. Also, the Saints have no reason to want to get rid of Payton. Not to mention that Payton has a team in New Orleans with young talent that will be competitive for years. He is basically unfireable. Why in this world would he want to leave? You can argue Brees being up in years and needing to find a new QB soon but if Payton goes to the Cowboys, he would need to find a new QB there too, so that doesn't make sense. This is just a waste of time.

Florio has been trying to make Payton to the Cowboys a thing for over 5 years.
It's an annual end of season ritual for him.

Seems like when the Saints are good it’s always Sean Payton to the Cowboys. Never fails

All of this plus would you rather work for Gayle or Jerrah? From all of the stories about Gayle, she seems like the exact type of owner that a coach like Payton would want to work for.

This is bullshite. How many times has a team traded for a winning HC coach? I don't think I know of any. They fire a coach and hire an assistant or a previous HC that got fired. bullshite article.

This is only being written because the Cowboys no longer have a viable storyline for the next month

I heard Anthony Davis to the cowboys, bank it!
