What is he expected to fetch this time?

He should definitely be brought back if his asking price did not surge due to injury.

Tough to say. That injury probably makes it much more manageable. Would an AJ Klein type contract or 3yr/15mill be too much?

He was having a great season.

Bring him back and continue Muhammad’s development.

Need another starting caliber DT still.

he was playing at a caliber worthy of some decent money. Was likely on pace for a 8-9 sack type year.

Good question and honestly don't know. I was thinking 2/8mil since nobody knows how he will return from an Achilles injury.

But he might want more.

Cam is the superstar DE, we just need a decent player opposite of him.

Bring Okafor back and go out and get another starting DT.

Saints placed DE Alex Okafor on injured reserve with a torn Achilles, ending his season.
He was hurt in Sunday's win over Washington. Okafor was having a nice bounce-back year before the injury, earning PFF's No. 14 grade out of 64 qualifiers at 4-3 defensive end. The 2013 fourth-round pick will hit free agency this offseason. Tue, Nov 21, 2017 06:34:00 PM

little tidbit on rotoworld. He can easily fetch a 3 yr 25 mill type deal imo. injury concern is there though now.

8 is too high unless it is incentive laden.

With Rankins, Onymata, and Davison I wouldn't spend much on a FA DT. DT takes longer for the most part than other positions before players develop to their peak. Next year Davison will be just getting there at 4 years and the other 2 will be going on their 3rd year. I think we are fine there, maybe bring Hughes back, plus we had a promising young guy who went on IR I think during preseason, but can't remember his name. It's nothing for most DTs to take 4-5 years to come onto their own and play consistently at a high level.

72 tackle season
8 sacks
6-7 pass deflections

pretty strong production oppo cam jordan.

those are based on having stretched his season to 16 gms

Yeah I don't see 8 both because he's coming off an injury and still hasn't had a double digit sack season in his career (yes many teams do look at sacks and limit guys because of this).

He signed with us for only $2 mil, and while he was having a great year teams don't pay top DE money, or even good DE money, to guys that aren't getting double digit sacks.

He'll likely settle somewhere between $3-6 mil, though I could see a sack escalator clause if he signs on the cheaper end of that that may pay him up to another $2 mil.

I'd be cool with 3/18M for a solid starter across from Cam. Still upside at that number because Okafor from last year is a 8/9 AAV player, IMO

So Fairley is done with football? What happens to his contract?

Fairley has a condition that doesn't improve with time, so unless he can get a team doctor to clear him (which won't be ours but maybe another team) he is done.

As for his contract, that's still in limbo but I expect something to happen soon/before FA. I don't think they'd get cap relief this past year even if they had settled so I'm guessing to avoid distraction they shelved it until the offseason.

Cowboys. Jones makes these boneheaded moves all the time. He hates losing players he drafted.

But also you have to look in context. He didn't start his rookie year, missed a year, and then started two straight years with an increasing sack total of 3 then 5.

And then there's the fact that he played more DT those two years before his contract. And the fact that he restructured to a 5 year $5.5 mil deal a year after signing the initial big contract because they realized it was a huge mistake.

Edit:
There's also the fact that Crawford is 290 lbs. while Okafor is 261 lbs. Teams put a premium on size, especially if stats are pretty equal.

Okafor is a medicore speed rusher. Teams don't pay top dollar for that. If he had those stats and was also 290 lbs. then yeah maybe he'd see about $8 mil per.

okafor was playing great. assuming they expect him to be 100% recovered, he's worth and played every bit of the value of a 7-8 mill a yr type player.

I'm not arguing he isn't worth that, simply that I highly doubt his market will go over $6 mil without a sack incentive written in (and then if so I think that $6 mil drop closer to $4-5 mil).

Some guys never recover from Achilles, and the ones that do usually aren't close to the same. I'm hoping he can return to at least 80% of what he was last year.

How long is recovery I wonder for achilles injury? Hopefully he’d be back by training camp. I could understand him being held out of OTAs and minicamp

He's also relatively young at 26, about to turn 27
