We all do realize that we dont have Gibbs any more right, and Im pretty sure that Williams will be making the decisions and run a slightly different defense. Point is we dont know what is going to happen with these guys until Greg Williams says so. But i forgot, TD is full of NFL GMS and Scouts. TD surely knows better than a proven DC who is considered one of the best defensive minds in the NFL.

Vaughn is a player that projects well to strong safety in the NFL for a team looking for a physical player that can play near the line of scrimmage. He probably won’t make many plays in coverage, but he is a guy that can hit and can tackle. His combine showing may have made him quite a bit of money, as he may have moved into third round territory. He had one of the best overall performances at the combine, running a 4.51 at 221 pounds and hitting the 37 inch mark in the vertical jump.

Vaughn is backing up harper (Vaughn is not a Free safety!)

Different Defensive Coordinator, different scheme. Gregg Williams is PROBABLY gonna run something different than Gary Gibbs. Why don't we wait and not pass judgement until we have a better idea of how these guys are gonna be utilized?

On top of that, GW said his safties are interchangeable, so when Chip projects to be a safety, he projects to be just that: a SAFETY.

I didn't take the time to read through all 4 pages of this thread, so I'm not sure if this has been covered here or not.

Sharper was a SS in Min, not FS. While the S position with Williams is interchangeable, this still leads me to believe that Sharper will oust Harper as the SS.

Here's how I think it will pan out....

CB - Porter, Greer, Jenkins, Gay, Torrence
S - Sharper, Young, Harper, Vaughn

David, Prioleau, Reis will be cut during camp

This is just based on this weekend's developments and the expectations that Young will transition well into the FS spot, but I think you'll see Jenkins being used interchangeably to hide coverages along with Sharper and Young.

Ultimately, I am very pleased with what they have done with this team. The D should now be at least above average if not a strength for us.

Other than the whole punter debacle, what was wrong with the rest of the picks...Malcolm Jenkins was rated the best DB on the board (whether u like him or not), Chip Vaughn is more secondary help(he was graded as a 2nd rounder who we got in the 4th), Stanley Arnoux ran the 2nd fastest time in the 40 for linebackers(Greg Williams likes to blitz the outside LB, so im guessing Williams liked him for the scheme he uses)-- if u liked the greg williams hire then give the picks a chance before u knock the players greg williams most likely insisted on getting

I cant defend or say anything good about picking the punter

I can. We need a punter so we drafted one. It's not some new phenomenon. que in Pitt, GB, SD, etc...... they all did it.

What was wrong with last years punter?? Its like the argument about drafting the RB in the 1st round..there was just more needs somewhere else.

Most of the time i agree with u midget but im not defending moving up to get a punter

they apparently didn't think he fit what they need him to do. I don't know enough about either guy, but I trust that the coaches know and that they felt it needed an upgrade.

I see plenty of people speaking of position of needs. Let's realize that this is a 5th round pick. Most likely, a player drafted here would wind up being a back up and eventually replaced 2 years down the line. A punter/kicker on the other hand is someone that is usually drafted in this area, and they can be a starter for 10 years.

They felt like P was a need; I trust them that it was, so I have no problem whatsoever with the pick.

Again, many other teams addressed their kicking needs in the draft as well. Pitt 2 years ago did it, and they are considered one of the best drafting teams in the league. Plus, they traded up into the fourth round to do it.

I thought trading for Mare was a horrible idea 2 yrs ago. We could have kept our pick and taken Crosby, but we decided to trade for an aged K who was terrible his past 2 seasons in MIA.

I'm glad to see that they're using the draft to grab the kickers instead.

Adding a punter who could also kick field goals isn't a bad move when u think of depth. I'm not sure if the current kicker and punter on the roster could be as versatile. He also adds a lot of competition in camp.

Trading up for a punter is reaching..I do usually trust the coaches but Taylor Melhaff made me have 2nd thoughts about this pick...We wasted picks the past to draft on kickers, so im not comfortable wasting a pick on a punter

I kno 5th rounders (if they make a team) are backups and special teams contributors but with Will Smith and Charles Grant possibly suspended, I wouldnt have mind getting a DE to have another body

Why would the Saints try Chip Vaughn at FS first?

Cause in GW's scheme, it doesn't matter which "safety" you play. He has stated that they are interchangeable positions.

It's gonna be the deepest group of DB's in many tears regardless of who starts or plays in what spot
