Probably the only team on that list to lose a first team all pro player and got zero pics.

What a freaking joke.

Less picks for Loomis to trade to move up 3 spots to take a rotational, injury-prone defensive-end in the first round.

Which means he’ll use future picks. Great.

Exactly and San Francisco seems to always get extra comp picks?

I never understand the formula for comp picks. Can someone explain how we missed out on Zack Baun comp pick ?

Would've been a great yr to get them too since compensatory picks can be traded this yr.

Who was the first team all pro?

I think it has to do with the contract they sign. Philly got Buan for reasonable terms and he outperformed his contract. Production during the season isn't a factor from my understanding, it's more about the value of the initial transaction.

They sign a huge contract and don’t do shite and the team gets a great pic.

Player puts up an all pro season and the team gets nothing. Makes sense….

Was a strongly worded letter sent to the NFL by Loomis or are the Saints doing stupid little things in the formula to not get picks?

Comp Pick Formula

Awards do come into play, but APY is generally the biggest factor.

The system is largely 1 to 1. Some teams do game this system (Ravens (under Newsome) and GB iirc are famous for it), but most teams sign the players they feel they need, and if they happen to sign less than were signed away (traded and cut players don't count nor do RFAs, only true UFAs) they'll get picks. There have been 2 or 3 years where we were mindful of it and waited to sign a couple of players after the cut off date because we had big time players go out, but most years it's not worth trying to chase and almost completely exclude yourself from FA, because the best you can get is end of round 3, which is where value starts to plummet anyway.

On the Baun comments, last year we lost 3 UFAs and gained 3, and Baun was projected at the time to only bring in a 6th rounder had we tried to game the system. But that means we would have lost out on signing Young all to try to gain the projected 6th.

No one, not even the Eagles, saw Baun being an all pro for them out of the gate, so whatever that would have boosted the pick to (remembering it can be no higher than an end of round 3 pick) was far from likely to happen.

Even still, I'll take Young over a very late 3rd anyday.

And after someone shines a light on this, the Saints magically get a compensatory pick. Nothing to see here.

Just do away with this system altogether. From a fans perspective, it seems rigged.
