Tom Pelissero tweeting:

quote:

It won’t end the #Browns’ winless streak, but the NFL’s head of officiating told me #Browns DE Myles Garrett shouldn’t have been flagged for roughing the passer, leading to a #Steelers TD in Sunday’s tie. Four other calls for landing on QB were correct.

quote:

There have been 14 roughing the passer flags thru 14 games in Week 1 — more than double the average per week over past 3 years. But only 2 were incorrect, per Riveron. Five calls for “body weight” is no surprise - it usually happens with areas of emphasis, then people adjust.

The "body weight" call kindof explains the call on Onymemata the play before.

quote:

The other incorrect roughing the passer call was on #Saints DE Marcus Davenport, per Riveron.

I get the intention behind the rule but it's kind of ridiculous, i'm not sure what they're supposed to do

On the Onyemata call, I can see how the ref thought he drove Fitz to the ground, not just simply taking him to the ground. They've called that forever.

The call on davenport the very play after was horse shite and I think reactionary on the ref.

His helmet hit Fitz's too. Ticky tack I know, but we've all seen it called a dozen times.

Yep. Get pissed when it happens but afterwards, what can you do.

Surprised Onyemata didn't get flagged with an unsportsmanlike call on the Davenport penalty. He threw an outright tantrum, which I can't blame him for

Seems like if the Qb is hit high it’s roughing the passer and if he is hit low then it’s roughing the passer...so how do you tackle him without getting a penalty...can’t go high and can’t go low on the Qb.... do they need to put a belt with 2 flags on it to make it legit?...

Gotta protect those star QBs at all costs. Can't have them get injured or else ratings and ad revenue will decrease. Good thing that's the only way those will decrease.

The way I've heard it explained before is if, while tackling the QB, you leave your feet in an "apparent" attempt to drive him to the ground, you'll get flagged for that all day. Simple physics has you delivering all of your body weight into the QB when coming to the ground. I'd have to see the replay of the Onyemata hit, but I think that was the call there. Davenport was a straight up tackle and he shouldn't have been flagged for that.

I get the idea. Any perceived attempt to "add more force than is necessary" to tackle a player is going to be flagged. Problem is these refs aren't trained enough to make a snap judegment call on it.

They want to make these calls fine, but make them reviewable so we can make sure it is what they think it is. These hits happen too fast, mistakes will be made but these are huge costly mistakes usually happening on a lot of 3rd and longs.

Exactly. If you use proper tackling technique, you'll land on the guy. If you try to arm tackle a QB, he'll get loose and run. If they are going to call this shite, might as well blow the whistle at first contact like two-hand touch.

I guess what they're supposed to do is sort of miss the QB with their body and use their arm and momentum to pull the QB down without falling on them.

It's like giving pass rushers style points for tackling, except instead of points, it's a chance of having the sack count versus being penalized.

All these roughing the passer calls, then last night Matt Stanford gets a helmet drilled into his chest and there’s no flag.

Well duh

In the end the officiating only resulted in 3 points. Saints still played like shite on defense and would've lost the game.

Defy gravity, DUH...!!!

The NFL has gotten so stupid with their judgement calls...

They should all be reviewed like the targeting calls in college...

You have to approach the QB and ask them to take a knee.
