New York Post gives the Saints' draft a 'C' grade

New Orleans Saints (C)
Already pretty good on offense with Drew Brees at the helm, the Saints took UTSA DE Marcus Davenport with their first-round pick. Davenport was one of the best pass rushers in the draft. Hopefully he’ll be good, since the Saints moved up 13 spots to get him and gave up next year’s first-round pick in the process.
Other NFC South grades:

Atlanta Falcons (B-plus)
Even though receiver wasn’t a particular need, the Falcons went for Alabama WR Calvin Ridley in the first round. Their second-round pick, Isaiah Oliver from Colorado, was one of the best corners in the draft, and he should help in NFC South play with the likes of Drew Brees and Cam Newton in the division.
Carolina Panthers (C-plus)
They used their first-round pick on a new weapon for Cam Newton in Maryland WR D.J. Moore, who ran a 4.42 in the 40, has good height at 6-feet and is a good returner. Their second-round pick, DB Donte Jackson, is even faster, with a 4.32 in the 40.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (B-plus)
Traded up to get 6-4, 347-pound Washington DT Vita Vea, who will team up with Gerald McCoy as a tough tandem to deal with. The Bucs addressed their running game in the second round with USC RB Ronald Jones II, who’s a big-play runner with little skill as a pass catcher.

People, it's hard to argue with anyone giving the Saints a 'C' grade as of today. We went into this draft with obviously one clear path, draft high upside guys who we can mold into starters in 2-3 years. This draft class will take at least that long to determine the successfulness of it. All of the players we drafted have yet to reach their full potential. Davenport, Smith, Leonard, Jamerson; all guys with high upside who haven't hit their potential. I love all of these picks, like a lot of you I'm sure. But for outsiders looking in, it's easy to give a 'C' or below grade today because these guys weren't the most talked about at their respective positions and some even considered reaches by a lot of "experts".
Jamerson was a steal at where we got him, and so was Will Clapp. Two late round picks who could make an impact for years to come.

FML. My life is over cause of these grades.

It's probably not an unfair grade, but I think the outrage over the cost of the trade is overblown. The Saints are hedging their bets that next year's #1 will be a very low pick (29-32) range. So the internal discussion is whether you think the 27th pick this season + the 29-32 pick next season is better that the consensus second best pass rusher in this draft.
For 13 years people have been saying the Saints NEED a pass-rusher...Every. Single.Draft. They weren't getting that guy at 27 this year, and (if they are as good as they think this season) they aren't getting him at the bottom of next year's 1st round either.
The pundits are acting as if it's a certainty the Saints gave up next year's #1-3 QB prospect or #1-2 pass rushing prospect. Assuming the Saints are really good this season, then they just gave up the 3-4 DB prospect or the #2 ILB for a prospect that wouldn't be available to them in either draft + a 5th rounder with no guarantee of even making the team

Well did they grade it off filling our needs. Because I believe we did fill our needs and added depth to positions we needed to

Solid post. My thoughts exactly. We need to quit worrying about trying to draft the next Drew Brees and simply build a solid and deep team, which the Saints have been doing well over the last 3 years. It is such a crap shoot drafting QBs out of college and I'd rather not try the "tank the season" approach to get a high draft pick to gamble on a QB.
We got Brees as a FA. I doubt Savage or Hill are the Saints QBs of the future based on the little of what we've seen of those guys. I'm hoping the front office can pick up a top-10 or 15 FA QB when we need it to plug in to a deep and talented team on both sides of the ball. I'd be surprised if the Saints actually draft Brees' successor at this point.

From 2017, the NY Post gave us a "thumbs up" while their analysis lacked any real insight
quote:
Saints: The Saints were busy early and productive, landing Ohio State CB Marshon Lattimore, rated by some as the best corner in the draft, at No. 11, and Wisconsin OT Ryan Ramczyk at 32. Both players have injury concerns. Lattimore has a history of hamstring injuries and Ramczyk is coming off postseason hip surgery, which might limit him into training camp and beyond. Verdict: Thumbs up
USA Today gave us a C+
quote:
New Orleans Saints: GM Mickey Loomis went to work patching the NFL's worst pass defense from 2016 by selecting Marshon Lattimore, who projects as this year's top corner, 11th overall. Marcus Williams, taken in Round 2, could be the new free safety. If he shakes the injury bug, look out for third-round LB Alex Anzalone. Some of Loomis' other choices could stir debate. T Ryan Ramczyk, the final pick of Round 1, may need a fair amount of time to crack the starting five. RB Alvin Kamara (Round 3) could be dynamic, but how many touches can he steal from Mark Ingram and Adrian Peterson?
Ram certainly needed a fair amount of time to crack the starting five. And Kamara really struggled in the shadow of AP

Would give the Saints a C as well.
Also expect that grade to go up every year

So, a draft that produced BOTH the offensive and defensive rookies of the year and several starters was originally graded a C+. Good to know that we really can't place any faith in these grades.

It's good to know what they think about our draft but more important how the rookies preform. After its said and done is what counts and last year was a great example of that, No one predicted that we had the best draft in our history till it was over I sure hope we can do it again.

I'd have to really look but after one year they are on track for that.

I just can't see why Tampa passed over Derwin James for Vita Vea when their pass D was so bad last year
Posted on 4/30/18 at 1:45 pm to hsfolk
Quarterbacks hate inside pressure. Think Vea next to McCoy.
Posted on 4/30/18 at 1:50 pm to ErikGordan
Brees especially. Brees can find ways to pick on a secondary/LBs. Brees can't find ways to stop inside pressure.
For a QB who loves to step up, that front could be trouble.

They had to choose between trying to stop Kamara/Ingram or Brees. They chose the former.

"I don't understand so it must be bad"

All draft grades are BS every year. How often are drafts revisited by the "experts"? Not often, because they'd look fricking stupid if they were. These draft grades are always based off of popularity contests. The teams that draft all of the big, flashy names from bigger schools are usually always the ones that get rated high.
I remember when the Saints took Danny Weurfal and Troy Davis in the same draft. Danny held all time NCAA passing records, and Davis held NCAA rushing records. The "experts" said this was one of the best Saints drafts ever... We all know what happened next!!! BUSTS.

Didn't pay attention to the draft but who the frick does this?
Two first round picks for a DE out of UTSA.
NO one can live up to that. Is the guy gonna be in the HOF as the best pass rusher of all-time?
frickin Payton, fricker is schizophrenic.
