28. New Orleans Saints (5-2)

The Pick: QB Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma

Forgotten in the Saints' impressive 2017 season is that Drew Brees will be a free agent after this season. Brees, who will turn 39 in January, can't be considered a long-term solution at quarterback even if he returns next season. And looking at New Orleans' roster, there is no one being groomed to take his place.

That should change. The Saints have drafted well enough on the offensive line and on defense to spend a late first-round pick on a bit of a project at quarterback. Baker Mayfield isn't a conventional pick given his size (6'1"), but his playmaking skill set and leadership are undeniable.

If head coach Sean Payton figures into the long-term plans of the Saints, it's easy to see him loving the way Mayfield plays and how well he'd translate into the New Orleans offense. And while some may not see the Oklahoma quarterback as a first-rounder, it only takes one team.

Wouldn't hate the pick, but I thought Mayfield has always been slated as a later round pick due to his size. I wouldn't mind the Saints adding another receiver or a stud TE to give Brees (or whomever) some extra weapons.

I wouldn't mind that at all honestly. Even if we resign Brees for another 2 years he'd be a good fit in this offense and give him that time to learn under Brees.

My only hesitation there would be if a beastly LB would be available. That's still our weakest spot on D.

I would have hated this a month ago, but now that Watson is balling out in Houston I'm honestly not so sure. I saw the same stuff everyone else did out of Watson in college: The dude was a leader and winner, but he lacked some of the tools that we typically associate with a top QB talent (he doesn't have the arm - and still doesn't - to make certain throws). For me, I would rather have a guy who HAS the tools, because poise and leadership can be learned, but a bigger arm can't..... Right..? I'm just not so sure anymore.

I would never have taken Watson. To me (I love the draft and follow it closely) Watson was a surefire bust. No way. "He doesn't have the talent!" ... and I was wrong, clearly.

So where does that leave us? Now I'm not sure about Mayfield. The guy is too small and lacks some of the required tools to succeed in the NFL. But he is damn sure a leader and a winner, not to mention a huge playmaker. Honestly he compares favorably to Brees coming out. And there is just something that sounds too right about the Saints taking Mayfield, letting him learn under Brees for one final "hurrah" season and then turning it over to him..

I think if we make a deep playoff push I could see us going QB in round 1, signing Brees for 2-3 more years and letting that QB develop behind Brees.

In all honesty, I hope Mason Rudolph or Josh Allen falls. I'd rather him over Mayfield

It seems lately QB's that have the most college experience or stayed 4yrs have better success early in NFL. Maybe it is because they became the leader on the college team and matured over time. Give me the QB that has been at a program for 4yrs doing it year after year the team leader.

Example: Wentz, Dak,and Watson

With that being said take the BPA no need to reach for QB. Some of these guys will be available in 3rd round.

Yes, I saw something about this. There is a correlation over the last 15 or so years with guys staying later doing better.

I agree with you, but think the Saints should be on the lookout and probably consider it their priority need. I guess it kind of depends on what happens with Brees' contract. But, either way, we have a ton of young talent and it would suck to waste it on a few years of bad QB play. If a guy is there that they think could be it, take him.

You know the guy that fits that description that actually might fall to us in the first round?

I love his attitude. I've said all year that I would LOVE for the Saints to take him, if he's a fringe Day 1 guy I'm ALL over it.

I really think he's going to be a stud.

Someone (not you Rand) swore he would never be a good QB because he only threw 49 mph and that intangibles wouldn't overcome that.

Watson is a fricking winner. He proved that in college. Now they need to fix the defense (as weird as that is to say).

The intangibles matter.

Emmitt Smith etc.

I thought Watson was an excellent pick for the Texans.

I think that Mayfield would be very good in the Saints offense.

I agree that it would be a hard decision between a stud lb and a qb.

Watson was the QB I wanted most by far in this draft, and I knew we were seriously looking.

Honestly if Lattimore didn't fall I would have been very torn between him and Barnett. Still crazy that Lattimore fell.

I don't think so. If you really think the QB you're thinking of taking is a guy worthy of a 1st round pick, possibly your franchise guy, then you take him. No question.

If you're not sure between a LB or a QB then you should take the LB because you have to have a lot of confidence in a QB to take him in the first.

I really like Mayfield, but I don't think he's 6'1". I think he's 5'11"ish and that's one meausrable that's just really hard to overcome. Brees and Wilson are the extreme exceptions. If he's a legit 6'1", though, Id reconsider. Especially at the end of the 1st. Dude's a winner.

Lamar Jackson is the best of the QBs that may be available where we are picking. Everyone else has serious questions.
