No thanks. Huge distraction. Should have kept this to himself. If I was his agent, I'd be pissed.

I'll pass.

If I'm a GM, and I think this "story" may keep up (like if they follow the first openly gay player through the draft, training camp etc), I'm wondering if it's an unwanted distraction for my organization. Do I really want my players potentially falling under scrutiny? Constantly fielding questions of how they feel having a gay player in the locker room?

Why come out now before the draft other than to get publicity and get talked about.

On a side note, why is this such a big deal that he comes out, does anyone else not give a shite? Either the dude can play ball and is worth drafting or he's not.

My responsibility as a GM is to build a team and look out for it's best interest. I'm not tasked with social change.

For what it's worth, I think players will be cool with a gay player if he's a good teammate. That's what the players really care about. Even the one's that had their apprehensions about having a gay player in the locker room will come around, and realize that they've most likely had gay teammates before and didn't know it.

What they won't appreciate is if being a gay player becomes a continuing narrative. They might become resentful for disclosing this before even joining the team.

I think every player should be required to state publicly gay or straight or "other." I mean, why should gays get all the attention?

Next they're gonna want a separate bathroom.

From what one GM said, and I agree with, is that if you put him in a locker room that has a strong leadership presence (New England, New Orleans, Denver, etc) this will not be a problem.

There are without a doubt gay people playing in the NFL right now. Mizzou has had no issues with him being in the locker room, and reports say they knew he was gay.

So if a bunch of college kids can handle it, then I'm sure a locker room of grown professionals could as well.

Is there going to be a "Should We" thread for every fricking guy that makes the news?

this year that seems to be the plan. Imagining the chaos when free agency really starts.

As referenced, Sam was a mid round prospect at best. It will be quite a case as to who will even sign him as an UDFA. I think no team will want to take on the media circus that will go along. This will make Tebow-mania look like nuffin.

He said it in the ESPN interview. Most scouts already knew, he knew it would come out, and he wanted to tell his story on his own terms. I think it shows maturity to come out instead of waiting for the story to break. At least this way, everyone who gets involved with him as a prospect knows up front what's going on.
Also, it's a very big part of gay men's lives. Many gay men live in fear of coming out to family, co-workers, etc. Coming out like this. Showing the world that a gay man can play a "manly" sport like football at a high level is big for the gay community.

I'm sure he'd love to...

I wonder if any of the college QBs he sacked feel violated now that they know?

Saints should draft him so Kenny Stills has a playmate.

He's disclosing it now so as to blunt criticism later or be tabbed as "lying" about it to help his draft status pre draft. Full disclosure, it's always the best way. He's not doing it to 'get attention'. That's the stupidest reason ever, no one would want to bring that on themselves voluntarily.
