Reported by NFL Media as a done deal six days ago, the deal hasn’t been done. As explained during PFT Live and as the Falcons have since confirmed to PFT, the restructuring of Ryan’s deal has not been finalized.

quote:

It means that the new league year began with Ryan having an unprecedented cap charge of $48.66 million. The new deal would have dropped his cap number by $12 million, to $36.66 million.

quote:

Under the restructured deal, trading Ryan before June 1 would trigger a cap charge of $55.5 million for 2022. Under the current deal, a pre-June 1 trade would result in a cap charge of $40.525 million.
Thus, it makes sense to hold off on re-doing the deal until the Falcons know whether they’ll be getting Watson.

So regardless, trading him results in at least a $40M dead cap hit? Sign me up

So regardless, nobody is going to take over Matt Ryans's contract. It seems the only way this happens is if Ryan is ok with not getting his money and restructuring.

Yep, they will get hosed by that Ryan contact regardless. No team is taking that burden for Ryan at his age even if they trade for him. Falcons will have to eat that

why wouldnt Ryan drag this thing out or refuse to restructure, thereby ensuring he's not traded and torpedoing the Watson to Atl nonsense? He's given his career to that worthless franchise, and now he's going to tuck his balls for them so they can push him out and sign his replacement?

Ryan is a good dude. If this was Aaron Rogers or Russel Wilson, they would do everything the can to frick over their current team.

Probably more guaranteed money spread out if I had to guess

Ryan could agree to restructure but only of the Falcons let him choose where he is traded.

I'm a saints fa. Through and through, have been since birth but I have to question the worthless franchise comment.

Do you think the saints franchise started the day Brees signed in 2006? Our franchise was a shite show before and partly during Brees tenure. Atlanta has been 2 2 superbowls since 98 and we have been to one

Falcons aren't competing in 2022 with or without Watson. It's almost a forgone conclusion with their cap situation and how bare their cupboard is.

Things get more interesting when they have gobs of cap space to sign free agents in 2023, and with Watson at QB.

Ryan doesn't have a no trade clause. I am really surprised they would do Ryan dirty like this. He definitely should not be doing them any favors.

Don't think so. I read he has a no trade clause.

He probably wants to be traded to a good team and can pick from the suitors, if there are any.

Agreed. Seems like Ryan holds a ton of cards in this deal. If he wants to finish his career in Atlanta - he should refuse to restructure.

I get that they want to try to do the right thing for Ryan, but if they really want to do the right thing they should just cut him. He gets to pick what team he goes to, so not concern about waving no trade clause. And, they could just designated him as a 6/01 cut. That would cut the cap hit in 2022 in half

They only have so much cap space because they only have 20 players under contract in 2023.

This has me hoping that Atlanta just passes. Too much money.
But they know they are a dumpster fire and want to seize the moment.

The Falcons would have to include a pair of 3rd rounders to convince someone to take Ryan. He has negative trade value at this point.
