I was there, 11 years old. Lots of folks had already left, thinking the game was all but over. And the Lions didn’t really rush hard, thinking it was a ridiculous long shot. I read somewhere Lions DT Alex Karras later said they were all laughing at how silly it seemed. I still have my ticket stub from the game. And later got Dempsey’s autograph..a very nice guy from what I remember. Special memories. RIP.

Heard Dempsey tested positive for the virus...(WTF)
Next day heard that he recovered...(WOW)
A few days later he is dead...(Really WTF)
Am I dreaming this? Did it break down this way?

Consistent with some accounts I've seen. Symptoms often come, ebb somewhat, then hit again even harder, sometimes through multiple cycles over two weeks or more. Not necessarily a consistent curve from start to recovery.

One thing I remember is that a lot of people left before the kick.I have several groups of friends who heard the roar of the crowd while walking to the car. I was in the south end zone. The kick was to the north goal post. What stands out to me is watching the referee peeking under the goal post like he was surprised the ball was going to make it over. When it did, there was bedlam in the stadium. I will not compare it to Tracey Porter running the interception back (I was there too) but you would have thought we had just won the Super Bowl instead of the first game for J.D. Roberts. It was not quite an omen of things to come.

Why do the Lions have their own solid painted end zone and their own decal painted at the 40 yard line in Tulane Stadium?
Lazy arse Doug Thornton won’t even allow the Superdome to give our own team a solid painted endzone in the NFC championship game watched by 1000 times as many people as the regionally broadcast Saints / Lions game back in 1970

The week before that Lions game we hosted the Rams, so that’s why you can tell the endzone had a blue background for the Rams and then they just painted over “RAMS” and changed it to “LIONS” as you can tell in that picture below.
I might do a deeper dive on this in a separate thread. If I owned the Saints I’d have lazy Doug Thornton fired and would renew the tradition of giving each opposing team a solid painted endzone in the Superdome

The part that you missed was the day after he "recovered", there was another article in the paper about how he started having trouble breathing and they put him in hospice so they could have access to a breathing machine.
The daughter said that his fever broke around Tuesday or so, so they thought he was on the way to recovery. Sadly, that turned out to be premature.

that wasn't a Saints exclusive
from what I've read... back in those days that was the norm... every stadium was done up for the match-up in it that day... basically like it was a Super Bowl every week
that's obviously long-changed... but it is a somewhat interesting part of NFL history

RIP Tom! I was at the Detroit game with my Dad- However, we left with about a minute to go, at that point Detroit had the ball, we didn't think there was a chance! We were outside Tulane stadium when we heard the roar- saw a guy with a transistor radio all excited, that's when he told us we had won on a FG!

For those mentioning the "painted end zones" it's something that was just a sign of those times. Look at LSU home games from that era and they did the same thing. One end zone would have LSU and its colors, the other for the opponent.

Al Dodd played a huge role in the buildup to Dempsey's kick. He made a good KO return and got out of bounds quickly. Then, he made a great toe drag swag catch to put the Saints in position.
