We have chased cornerbacks in the draft like cleveland chases quarterbacks, with similar success. I hope we go another direction with the first pick. That maybe selfish and short selling cb talent but I want to see something else for a change. Last year was refreshing, regardless of how successful anyone considers it.

I agree, besides our secondary as a whole might look a whole lot better without having to spend draft picks if we weren't giving opposing quarterbacks 72 seconds to throw the ball.

I think we have to see how Williams pans out to see if our evaluation of CBs has improved under Ireland. I think we made a really good pick in Swann, but concussions are a concern. Still he looked really good for a 5th round pick that got significant playing time.

I am also concerned with the longevity health of Lewis. He is getting banged up increasingly more often. That leaves Breaux and Wilson as our CBs. It looks pretty thin pretty quickly with Swann having career threatening head injuries and Lewis getting gimpy. I would like to see us add another CB, at least, by the middle rounds.

I liked William Jackson since last year but at 12 overall, that is beyond a stretch. Third round is more like it.

They aren't my top selections, but I wouldn't hate this draft all. Fans get too caught up in the names that they like/know, and anything else is a failure. Example- This board, re:Jarvis Jones, 2013. I've seen more than one person refer to Jackson as the top cover CB in this draft.

I think it has less to do with selecting certain names and more to do with addressing needs. Everyone knew we needed what we thought Jones would be, and that was clearly our top need. If we had selected him then we might be in a better position than we are right now defensively (who knows? We are deficient at pass rusher for sure).

CB is pretty universally seen as maybe a need in the 6-10 range for us when it boils down to it. This team has several talented players at the position, they are just injury prone. We are much better off leaving that position alone and gambling on it, than we are gambling on a position that is completely talent devoid like the DE opposite Cam, or DT. We need talented bodies there because we essentially have none. That isn't true for DB. It wouldn't matter to me if that was the best CB in this draft, I would still hate this pick (Ramsey aside as personally I see him more as a S, and also a transcendent talent).

It would be dumb to take a CB when that positon isn't even a top 3 biggest need

I bet they grabbed him at #12 because they wanted the Saints to draft those 3 positions and knew they were going LB & DT in the 2nd & 3rd instead of taking BPA of those 3 positions and hoping to land a CB in the 2nd or 3rd.

A lot of "experts" have been projecting him to go in the first or second round, so expecting him to be there in the third is wishful thinking and not realistic.

Horrible for guys who are supposed to be good.

Our #1 need is...pressure on the QB's. Not hard to figure out. Very expensive to get either in FA(Fairly is a coin flip)
Sack and pressure the opposing QB's that we made look great all of last year.
Best edge rusher we can get and best interior rusher we can get in the first 3 rounds.

Please?

Offense? We have Drew Brees for that.

This mentality is REALLY going to hurt NO soon

As much as I hate to say it, I think it has already hurt us. Our offense isn't as potent as it used to be.

Agreed. But with an elite defense, it's good enough. Unfortunately, we are way more than 1 draft away from an elite defense. So both sides need to be addressed

We did fall to 7th in points scored I think and fell to 2nd in total yards from scrimmage?

What? Good luck finding a mock draft that doesn't have him going in the first round. He's often in the top 15 picks now.

I want Alexander from Clemson if we're taking any CB that early

Actually just read that Alexander could be in for a draft day slide. Apparently he's a difficult person to deal with off the field and that some of his college coaches aren't giving him the best reviews to the NFL.

That's coming from Roto.

This really shows the intellect of these two boneheads that ESPN puts on air. I like Jackson a lot, but would never pick him that early in this draft. Jones is a reach and a half. This is an F-----.

SN: The only thing worse than these two is that dork ESPN put on air last night trying to cover the McGregor situation.

I get that, I definitely do. However, the draft never has, and never will, play out to where we address our needs in order to most urgent down on.

quote:

Everyone knew we needed what we thought Jones would be, and that was clearly our top need.

It was one of our top needs, and still is, but that doesn't mean we force a pick like Jones just to satisfy that need. There were plenty reasons for a team not to like Jones.

quote:

If we had selected him then we might be in a better position than we are right now defensively (who knows? We are deficient at pass rusher for sure).

He has 5 sacks in two years, and Kikaha has 4 sacks in a rookie season where he was asked to drop in to coverage too often, got injured, and saw his playing time decrease because of a new coordinator. I'll take Kikaha over Jarvis Jones.

quote:

CB is pretty universally seen as maybe a need in the 6-10 range for us when it boils down to it.

6-10 is probably stretching it. I would love to address DL with 2 out of the first 3 picks, but one could make the argument that CB is as big of a need, if not bigger.

At least with the DL you have a Pro Bowl starter at DE (Cam), a DT that player that played well in limited snaps last year(Fairley), a 2nd year Jack/DE that looked good rushing the passer last year (Kikaha), and two other 2nd year players that got playing time last year and could fill a bigger role this year (Richardson and Davison).

At CB, you have Breaux and a bunch of ?s. Lewis is turning 30 this year, and has dealt with injuries the last two years. Swann impressed as a 5th round rookie, but 3 concussions in one year is putting him one hit away from retirement. PJ Williams had the draft stock of a late 1st rounder, but has yet to see the field. Kyle Wilson played well as a nickle/dime CB, but he's not in the long term plans.

I'm with you that I want Lawson or Rankins at 12. I just would not be surprised if a DB is taken in the first 3 rounds, and wouldn't necessarily hate it.
