To 27? Of course not. To a reasonable trading range of 10-15? Yes that was and still may be possible. You never really know what a team is thinking about a guy and who they have in mind.

With the new Drew deal, we aren’t going QB this year in the first 4 rounds.

What if they really want Barkley? That could be a possibility. I remember when Reggie Bush was for sure going to the Texans at #1. Nobody knows what these teams are wanting.

Mayfield hasn’t played a down of pro football and we’ve already decided he’s the only QB on planet Earth who can replace Brees? Come on.

You do realize it's a one year deal that could become a two year deal, and he'd be pushing 42 at the end of the 2021 season if we signed him for one more year, right?

You want to get a guy to sit behind Drew for a year or two. Hell we were THIS close to getting Mahomes last year before KC jumped us, and Payton straight up said that.

I've already said I have no clue if this kid will be good or not, but it's extremely clear Payton really likes him. So it's not so much us thinking he'd be the one, it's Payton.

No, of course not. But in my opinion he is literally as good of a fit as you get for Payton’s offense, both in his play style and his personality. I have absolutely no doubt that he would be a franchise QB for us for a decade+ (stuff like injury aside). Obviously I’m not in the FO (a good thing amirite?) but if they feel any semblance of the same way then it isn’t crazy to want to go up and get him.

Of course it’s possible someone else could come along who fits us well, but considering the Franchise only has found 2 guys in over 50 years....

Rand said it’s Mayfield or 40 years of mediocrity (unless he was joking)

I was mostly joking. My actual position is:

-Us and baker are a great fit
-finding “the guy” is hard
-I’m scared of life after Brees

I took it as hyperbole, but it could still turn out to be true. We have no way of knowing either way.

That’s fair. Personally I think we’re going to have to endure a couple seasons of suck before we’ll be in a position to grab Brees’ successor. As hard as it is to draft a franchise QB, what we lucked into with Brees in FA is a once in a franchise’s life black swan event that will never be repeated

We have so much young talent now though. Think about the core we just made w/ the last 2 drafts. If the Saints grabbed Mayfield (who by his own word is willing to sit behind Brees), let Brees finish out his contract and then have a guy we believe in there who learned at the knee of that hero with the fully loaded still-young roster in tact and 3 years of rookie QB money left

To me that’s a no brainer if we have the ammo and Baker gets far enough down.

The alternative is, as you’ve said, sucking until we’ve found the guy and burning years of kamara, Shon, etc

I get it but there’s an opportunity cost to doing that which is that you miss out on a player or two who might help us get a ring this season or next. It’s possibke you’d be trying to protect the future of the franchise by sacrificing a second Super Bowl. We’d just don’t know. Glad it’s not my decision.

This is all so ridiculous. You know how many sure bet, sure fire first round QBs end up washing out. Most of them do! You guys willing to give away all these picks, the picks that by the way you say we did so well with over the last two drafts for a big giant maybe? Screw that. Take the BPA. When Drew is gone we gonna suck for a while till we find our next QB. Or maybe, just maybe we win with defense for a change and a 2nd tier QB. Don't mortgage the future for any one player.

so after Brees retires the franchise is doomed to another 40+ years of mediocrity.

That's a little dramatic, yeah?

I mean Nick Foles was super bowl MVP last year after knocking out Case Keenum. Blake Bortles was bounced in the same round.

For teams that don't have a franchise QB, you draft until you get one. It may take several tries to get the right guy, but if you don't have one your only other choice is to pay through the teeth to get on in free agency on the rare occasion that one worth paying for is available.
It comes down to whether they think he is the guy. If he is I think something like what K.C. paid last year would be fair. Post-Brees this team could still be very young but very good. If you get the right guy you can keep most of the team intact because of the flexibility of having a QB with a low salary (e.g. Russell Wilson and Seattle, Goff in LA, Wentz and Philly).

Sea is the definition of needing to find that QB on a rookie deal. Look at the team before his new deal and then after.
