Great post.

For those that don’t watch/at work.

TLDR:
-Organization treats players with respect from the front office all the way down to the training staff.
-They let the players be themselves as long as they do their job.
-We don’t kill our players at practice throughout the week, again as long as they are paying attention to their specific jobs/roles/reads.
-The coaches don’t go around talking about players behind their backs causing grudges between staff and players.
-No bull shite rules just to discipline players over small stuff, if the meeting is at 9:30, as long as you are walking in at 9:29, no fine, no drama, no arse chewing.

He made an interesting point at the end about the reason why certain teams keep winning. I think part of it is due to stability and excelling in Front Office matters, all the way to ownership.

But it's also getting someone like Payton, understanding him needing to change, and hiring likeminded guys to help him accomplish that. I remember tales of Payton being a complete hardass early on and that worked for that generation of players. But it doesn't work for this group, which is why I feel like we had such an overhaul on the roster. Payton wasn't motivating them the right way anymore and this generation of players really lean on one another to police things so having a good group of leaders is super important. Guys like Cam, Demario, Ram, Armstead, Brees, Jenkins, who will be completely candid with the coaching staff and letting them know when to back off and give them some rest and when to get after things.

And if you look at the rest of the league, a lot of successful head coaches are very similar. Shanahan, McVay, Harbaugh, Andy Reid and we know Bruce Arians is like that as well. Hell, after putting up and keeping Bell and Antonio Brown well in check, we can assume Tomlin is like that too. You can't really say a whole lot of hardasses win in the NFL other than Belichick, and that's more to do with how fricking good he is with X's and O's. In fact, wasn't one of the Giants HC drilled for being such a drill seargeant?

I don't think BB has the reputation of being a hardass among the players. They just have a complicated system that lots of guys can't pick up.

Brady was the hardass

I would say being a hardass doesn’t really work in the NFL in general. You’re not a man coaching teenagers or young adults, you’re coaching other grown men. You need a sense of mutual respect there to get along with your players.

This goes a long way with this generation of players. If they feel slighted or disrespected in any way, they'll quit on you. Right or wrong, that's how it is and our FO and coaches do a good job of it, hiring guys like Nielsen and Richard, player's coaches, only enforces that.

I think honesty is also very important. I think a lot of teams play a lot of poker face and say shite they don't mean in order to not cause any hurt feelings, piss anyone off and cause any potential distraction because then people keep secrets, people form cliques and guys feel like others aren't telling the truth, hiding stuff from them. So it only ends up causing distraction. I don't think any of our players or coaches, mince words. They say what they mean, even if it fricks with you

It may suck at first, but once it becomes the norm, guys appreciate it, especially the leaders on the team. I also think that's something Payton has learned along the way. To know where players stand with you at all times, airing shite out. Hell that's why players love playing for Terry Francona. He's the same way. If he doesn't like what you're doing, he will tell you to your face. Not in front of the other guys, but he will tell you.

Coughlin was known for saying things like if you are not 15 minutes early you are late. After he left NY he ended back in Jax and is a major reason why players wanted to leave. The last points in the TLDW post was exactly how Coughlin ran his teams in NY & Jax.

Come back Janoris, come back, you were the best CB that they had while you were there.

Man. That’s definitely what you want former players saying about your team. Kudos to the front office and coaches.

Wish we could have kept him. Of all the people we had to cut because of the cap he was the one I wish we could have kept the most. #2 corner a real question mark for us now.

No I think Belichek is a hard arse but he had the veteran presence and reputation to keep it going. Players often talk about the patriot way and how it sucks but everyone buys into it bc he will get them a ring and make them successful. With Brady gone, it is going to be difficult for him to continue doing that. If he can’t get the team winning again then that isn’t going to work much longer

Tomlin may be the GOAT coach in dealing with head cases. He may not have turned them all into role models but he won with some of the worst characters in the league.
He kept Antonio Brown in check so long that it was a legit surprise when he went full retard. He may be the Patron Saint of NFL frick ups.
Had a Pouncey brother stay under the radar and not get in trouble his whole career.
Even Big Ben hasn’t turned out to be a serial killer yet…Tomlin has him holding at the rapist stage. That’s a huge accomplishment. That’s a win bc it’s gonna escalate after Tomlin isn’t there for him.

Vontaze Burfict and Rueben Foster probably would be contributors and Pro-Bowlers under Tomlin.

Aaron Hernandez may have been the first openly gay All-Pro right before Tomlin released him for his sexual orientation if he played for him. Along with the Pouncy’s. And they would have been the first gay couple to win a Super Bowl.

Tomlin is probably the most feared coach in the NFL by the players.

If I played for him I probably wouldn’t be living with my grandma in my 40’s and never would have had to have her arrested for domestic assault when she gave me 10 licks with a switch at my daughters wedding.

Tomlin got my respect.

My only regret is waiting a week to read this.
