He's a good HC. Sure he's made some bone head decisions but overall a good coach. I still like 'em.

He is a great head coach and will be here a long time imo. You people who bitch about the D and the running game blow my mind. Every offseason he has done things to improve our D. Look at the moves and draft picks we have made. Injuries killed this team this year plus bad kickers. And we didn't run the ball this year much b/c for one: our line wouldn't block for shite and two: we really didnt have a healthy, proven RB to run out there. Deuce wasn't healthy and is going downhill and RB has been hurt a lot. PT came on at the end pretty well but we don't really know if he can carry the load yet.

I really believe this was a much better team than the record shows, and if healthy, we win the divison next yr.

It's a lack of fundamentals and seemingly no accountability for making mental mistakes. No one seems to feel pressure to perform.

On top of that his teams are soft and show a lack of heart at times.

Sean Payton's teams are like a fine tuned sports car. It runs like a dream on a smooth track but the minute things get bumpy it loses all momentum.

Bingo.

OK everyone, you say he is a good OC but not head coach, explain why. Read my post above, and explain why. And don't say he doesnt get onto his players, b/c i've seen him chew guys out plenty of times.

I disagree. He got Brees here didnt he? they are a professional group with a good locker room and play hard without distractions, wife swapping, coke parties, ..do i need to go on guys? Lets face it guys, New Orleans is a coaching graveyard. Mora was a good coach and Haslett was too but in todays game you get 4/5 years max or you are gone. They need a real DC ans a commimment to play defense. D was crap with Sean goy here still sucks, that is the problem. Offense is incredible....and wasted like a pretty dress on an ugly girl

If the Saints could play D like in Mora's day they would be fun to watch.

great???? come on....

quote:

You people who bitch about the D and the running game blow my mind

they do this b/c the D is BAD and we don't run the ball enough. Look at the stats dude, SP is NOT committed to the run. He'll start out running a little and if things don't go right he starts slinging the ball around. This is one of the reasons people say he acts like an OC. A good coach will stick with the game plan...

quote:

Look at the moves and draft picks we have made
Look at his draft picks since he's been here. How many picks has he had, how many have made an impact. What about free agents? Without doing any research, his first year was good, Colston, Bush, Brees, but since then very few impact players.....
quote:

Injuries killed this team
I'll give you this one....
quote:

bad kickers
Payton's call here. His responsibility to bring in good people. I know he's not the GM, but he does have a LOT of input....
quote:

And we didn't run the ball this year much
quote:

b/c for one: our line wouldn't block for shite
our run-blocking was not real good this year. But take heart, i'm sure we'll get a good O-lineman in the draft... O, wait, we don't have enought draft picks, and we need more help on D, so it looks like all our attention will be there again this offseason.. Hopefully better results next year...

we knew Deuce wasn't 100% going into the season, and we still stuck with the players we had. SP must have thought his RBs were good enough to carry the load, either that or he doesn't care about the run...

I really believe this was a much better team than the record shows
But in the end we will be sitting home AGAIN watching the playoff... The record is really the only thing that matters....

Amen to that.
Unfortunately for us the NFL is more Baja than Daytona.

The past two offseasons we have addressed the D way more than O. Payton is trying, but everything hasnt exactly worked yet, but again that had a lot to do with injuries this year.

He fixed the kicking problems. - Give credit where its due.

Since he has been here he has either drafted or signed 4-5 good starters on D. So don't say that he isn't working to make the D better.

No one knew Deuce would suck as bad as he did this year, and we werent prepared for Bush to get hurt.

All that said, NO TEAM IN THE NFL could have overcome the amount of SIGNIFICANT injuries we had this year. Sean Payton is a very good HC, and Benson/Loomis are very smart in not firing him.

ding ding... and the D has NOT gotten better, so if you are addressing it and its not getting better, then you may very well be the problem....

I agree, we had a ton of injuries this year but, which player, on the D, other than McKinzie (sp..), was making an impact before they were injured??

Yes he did.... after 1/2 the season.... I give credit for fixing it, but he fixed a problem that he created. are you supposed to get credit for that??

Again, he is working but the D isn't getting better. Who, or what, is the problem???
quote:

Deuce didn't suck.. he didn't get the ball enough... he wasn't as "injured" as Payton made out early in the year.. how do you go from not able to carry the ball once in on game b/c you're not healthy to carrying the ball 15-20 times the next game (i don't remember exactly how many carries he had, and i'm to lazy to look it up)..
quote:

we werent prepared for Bush to get hurt.
Hasn't he had some type of injury every year since he came into the NFL??? if this is true, bad planning by coach and gm....
quote:

Sean Payton is a very good offensive HC, and Benson/Loomis would be very smart in moving him to the OC position .

fixed it for ya...

Yes. This would be a resounding yes had he at least made the playoffs one of the two years after the trip to the NFC Championship.

I'm not sold on his HC abilities just yet. But us Saints fans will regret the day if Sean Payton and Drew Brees were ever to be separated from each other. There relationship alone lets SP keep his job. We just need to go hire a proven, hard nosed, D coordinater to compliment his offense.

Absolutely not! He needs to go back to Offensive Coordinator. I give the man credit for his skills at calling plays and allowing his QB to run the offense. Well you know what I mean.

We see it all the time. A young gun Defensive or Offensive Coordinator is touted as the next Head Coach Guru and he usually flops. Some guys are just not cut out to be the head man.

With what I've seen the last 3 yrs...

As a HC I think he's about average.

As a OC...very good play-caller, not great, but he sees the team through his offense.

let's rephrase the question...

Would Payton be a good head coach if he didn't have Drew Brees?
