Is it too early for a 2023 FA sticky thread?

Sportrac - New Orleans Saints FA's

Saints obviously don't have a lot of cash to deal with so I expect some big names to get cut or let walk in FA. I also don't expect any big name splashed signings but there are maybe some intriguing "under the radar" young FA's and maybe some wiley vets with a year or two of tread left that could help the Saints get through this rebuild.

From this list IMO re-signs (and I think they will be affordable for the Saints)

QB Andy Dalton
TE Jwun Johnson
DE Tanoh Kpassagnon
T Calvin Throckmorton
DE Kentavious Street

These players I think the Saints need back but they may get offers we can't match.

P Blake Gillikin
LB Kaden Elliss
DE David Onyemata
DT Shy Tuttle

Guys we can not afford to keep or shouldn't IMO

DE Marcus Davenport

Players I think are gone that will need to be replaced in FA and draft

WR Michael Thomas
RB Mark Ingram
QB Jameis Winston
S Bradley Roby
K Will Lutz

Anyone have a line on some lower tier FA than might be diamonds in the rough?

I'll allow it as long as you fix "resigns" to "re-signs"

I think the Saints need to give Minshew a look to be honest.

If they're gonna hitch their wagon to Dalton to start the year, we're screwed. But its clear, they quit on Winston.

Juwan Johnson is a RFA (1st round tender 6mil, 2nd round tender 4.3mil (can we even do this?)) --- we need to figure this out IMHO.

Throckmortion ERFA tender is 900k

Kpassagnon + Street will get similar minimum deals to their last contract.

Gillikin is a RFA, he's gonna be cheap
Elliss is an UFA, if some team is gonna pay him for a spurt of production have at it. we can try to recoup a comp pick

IMHO: Onyemata + Tuttle go to Atlanta

Depends, sub 12mil APY and I think its a good idea to keep him

CGM + Ingram + Winston should all be replaced

You have Roby for another year and solid depth is important. We had guys off the street at a point.

Lutz needs some competition because its not dependable at all. Strong arse leg, but damn his <50 accuracy hurts

P Blake Gillikin

He was low key terrible this year. Huge regression from everyone on special teams.

L added Roby to this list because I could see him being a June 1st cut.

Some good players are going to get cut / traded for cap reasons. That can not be avoided. I would not be surprised at all to see Lattimore shopped in a trade but I'm not predicting it. Cam Jordan could shock everyone and be a cap causality but I would bet on them keeping him since IMO Davenport will get a big FA contract. The could decide to keep Dav and give him the money and cut Jordan loose but that's a risky more with Davenports history. IMO the Saints need to use whatever pieces of value that have to get picks and cap relief

Based on recent trends, I think you need to also look at FA that spent some time on IR last year and or have been subpar do to nagging injuries the past few years. This team seems to like to give these guys a shot hoping to strike gold

Both are prime for a restructure to turn some of their salary into a bonus and spread the hit (kick the can down the road)
Cam's 2023 cap hit is expected to be $25.7M. If cut, the team is only saving $2.2M. Restructure, they may be able to knock that hit down to $12-15M
Latt's 2023 cap hit is expected to be $22.5M. If traded, his cap hit jumps to $28.5M. Restructure could knock the hit down to $10-12M

Lutz, Johnson, and Gillikin we need to make sure we keep… Tuttle and Onyemata I’d like to keep… Throckmorton for depth, Street if he’s cheap… restructure Thomas…

Everyone else can roll out… not huge losses… I’m liking the idea of Max Dugan in the later rounds, as he could be another Purdy

I think you're right, but personally I'm tired of kicking that can even though I know thats how teams afford these players most of the time.

I'd add Mike White and Tyler Huntley to that list to look at.

Saints aren't drafting their QB of the future this season you'd expect, They should be in position to have a high 1st in 2024, mayne two 2st if they can iron out the CSP trade.

Any one of these is worth a look to see if they can compete with Dalton and maybe develop into something.

ETA: I'd also look into Carr but would not trade for him and wouldn't pay him anywhere near what he's under contract for now.

If he hits FA which I think he will LV will end up cutting him like we will MT Maybe NO has an inside shot at him because of CDA. Maybe that's not a good thing. Who knows

Feel the same way, but because of the way the contracts are structured and how far over the cap are; kicking the can down the road is the only way to get back under. IMO, they will need to do this through 2025 just to fix the current mess. If they try to "go all in" during the next 2 years; they'll be in this mess for the next 10+ years

Yea you're right.

What I'm afraid of is this FO and coaching staff still believing this team can make a run. That what they saw this season was just bad luck and injuries holding them back.
