Ideas to take the NFL's place? No longer a fun distraction from life

I don't mean football leagues, I mean things to get involved in. I realize I've spent far too much of my life emotionally invested in something broken, corrupt and incompetent.

For me, not watching the games won't be that hard. What will be is finding a distraction. Often times as I'm trying to go to sleep, the Saints would be my go to. Just silly thoughts about the roster, matchups, mindless crap that would help me fade away.

Ideas?

Golf. Fishing. Hunting. Playing outside with kids. Literally, the possibilities are endless.

6 Nations Rugby is about to start and they get officiating right in that sport. Never a missed/blown call. Hard hitting non stop action with fans and players who respect each other. Give it a try!

Excited about the 6N. And it's a Rugby World Cup year.

also, Major League Rugby starts this week. This is a US based professional league, and New Orleans has a team.

NHL hockey is legit if you're looking for something mindless.

The thing I would suggest to the OP is to check out the major shows for New Japan Pro Wrestling. It's starting to gain a decent following in the states. You can find these matches free on vimeo or dailymotion.

Check out these matches from Wrestle Kingdom 13 (their version of Wrestlemania) this year:
Will Ospreay vs Kota Ibushi
Chris Jericho vs Tetsuya Naito
Kenny Omega vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi

This from Dominion 2018:
Kenny Omega vs. Kazuchika Okada

I think you will be downright SHOCKED at the athleticism, brutality, and storytelling in the New Japan matches if you give them the time of day.

It's obviously staged, but these guys are downright amazing and have brought new life to my wrestling fandom that was on its death bed.

If you want to watch an American product...

Watch WWE NXT on the WWE Network and avoid the main roster programming. It's 1 hour a week, and the pay per views happen 5 times a year or so and are only 2.5 hours long. It is also not touched by the mid 70s year old Vince McMahon, so it is much more catered to the present audience. It's just as good if not better than New Japan, but will cost you a subscription service to see.

Along with the above TV entertainment, I've really enjoyed fishing in Lake Ponchartrain along Lakeshore Dr. even though it's hard to catch fish there this time of year. Beautiful scenery. Nice breeze off the lake. Just an easy way to kill a few hours and enjoy the peace and tranquility.

I've only been doing this the last month or so, but I didn't have a passion for it previously and somehow found myself really digging it.

I've been watching the UFC and enjoying it more. The ref is hardly ever a factor and although the judges sometimes frick up, I do t have the investment in it like the saints so I enjoy just watching the fight.

I'm in the same boat. Football WAS my favorite form of entertainment.

Too much of my emotion, lifestyle and money to wrap up in something that is ultimately meaningless entertainment, especially when the outcome of the games are tarnished.

I'll still watch/enjoy the games, but won't carve out my schedule for the event to prevent other things from happening on Sundays. I'll use it to have fun and gather with friends, but won't sit and watch/study the game/personnel intently like it really matters.

Oh well. I guess I'm getting older and wiser. I need a new and more productive hobby to use as my entertainment.

Find something you suck at but sort of enjoy.

Keep working at it and getting incrementally better until you’re halfway decent. It matters not what it is. I’ve done this with woodworking and boxing over the last few years.

Real competition.

Congress should undo their approval of the NFL/AFL merger.

Only way the NFL gets fixed is if it has a legit competitor forcing them to be transparent.

Competition makes every athlete, team, product, service and organization better.
