I think it's more likely we trade back than trade up

With the 27th pick, the Saints will have several players to choose from that will possibly be available in the 2nd round. I could see a team at the top of round 2 trying to get back into the 1st to jump another team, and the Saints would be good partners to trade with.
With the Ingram trade up and Bounty Gate, we lost three second round picks. That's basically two starters taken from this team. That could have been our athletic receiver. Or our solid corner depth.
The Saints need to get some depth back, and I'd love for them to drop back a little and still get the person they wanted and have another second round pick later.

Totally agree. Like Landry from LSU.

Every year people want their team to trade back. It just rarely works out like that.

With the rookie salaries adjusted the incentive to move up is much greater now. In 2012 there were 16 1st Rd trades (3 picks traded twice). In 2013 11 1st Rd trades. Just the numbers that trades (for every move down there is a move up) are increasing.
The Saints won't pass on overwhelming value no matter what position. Without that at #27 I could see a trade back for a better fit of need & value.
Of course all this way early draft talk is pretty loose until free agency shakes out. They might re-sign Strief, dlP, Harper, & or Jenkins- or maybe new guys at any of those spots. Then again, they might all be gone. Clear draft needs won't be determined until after that.

It would be sweet if we could trade back and get a CB, WR, and C all in the 2nd round (if we could somehow acquire 2 extra 2nd round picks via multi team trade or a team with 2 2nd rounders)

Center looks like one of the best bets in the draft. I'd give great odds they could get the #1 center, Swanson from Arky with the 2nd Rd pick. Go 3rd Rd and you could get someone that is still prolly an upgrade like Stork FLSt or Larsen UtahSt. Cheaper, younger, more upside.
Even better would be one that could swing over to guard in a couple of years when we get tired of paying $20mil+ a year for Evans & Grubbs as they get older and slower.

Im the opposite
I get hyped up every year and then boom 3 hours later a trade down for the Pats. It works out but damn its a buzzkill

Have we ever traded back in the Payton/Loomis era? Outside of the lower rounds?
Posted on 1/17/14 at 7:24 am to Patrick O Rly
I don't think we have. Payton and Loomis are usually pretty aggressive on draft day but if their guy isn't there at 27, or he is but they think they can get him a few picks later, I could see the urge to trade back and acquire more picks.
At first I wanted to be like Atlanta and make the big trade up for a "Julio" type receiver, but then you can see how making these trades decimated their depth and when the injuries piled up, their season was over.

Exactly
I have always wished for more 2nd round picks. You can still find quality guys that can start and you get great value for 4 years salary wise. But being at 27 that seems a area hard to get a dance partner with to trade down.
As Blu so often shows when 'trade up' talk is heavy the price...like the rent is to damn high!
One thing is for certain. The Saints FO will do something no one saw coming.

Waiting all night for us to select in the late 1st round, to only find out we won't pick that day.
Seriously though, trading up or down seems like an option. San Fran gave up their 1st (31st) + 3rd for dallas' 18th pick. If we're jumping up, it HAS to be a player that was mocked top 10 and fell due to an abundance of QBs/WRs taken and say someone like clowney or barr fell.
Trading back though? I think I'd love it. Look at what we gave up for ingram (1st the next year and 2nd that year). That's a nice trade I'd take any day.

I disagree. This feels like a year we trade up. Brees isn't getting any younger and we need difference makers now. Look what going and getting Julio did for the Falcons in 2012. With the defense we have and that kind of offense, we'd be unstoppable.
I'm not saying give away the next 5 years of 1st rounders too do so, more like if we need to jump up like 5-10 spots to do so, I wouldn't be opposed.

I CEREUSLY DOUBT THEY WAIST A FIRST OR SECOND ROWND DRAFT PICK ON A CENTER. HAD TWO GET THIS OF MY CHEST
Posted on 1/17/14 at 8:27 am to Chad504boy
There is no Center that will grade high enough to warrant a 1st Rd pick this year IMO.
It might take #58 over #91 to get the top rated one. I think that is Swanson. There would be some I think could be immediate starters and upgrade over dlP in the 3rd. I like Larsen UtahSt & Stork FlaSt there.
Again tho, dlP could be re-signed, Lelito backs up and we don't give Center a sniff in the draft. There's a lot of pivotol moves to be seen in the free agency process.

Guess it depends on who is doing the grading. Didn't Dallas draft a center a year ago at the end of the 1st when he was graded to be a 3rd rounder?
The meltdown on their board was hilarious.

and their center was arguably the best lineman
anyone want to pull up the PFF comparison of dallas' starting center vs. the rest of the leagues?

I see some QB needy team waiting on QB till the second rnd then gets nervous and trades up with a late 1'st rnd team to grab one.

I have been wanting ML to do this for a couple of years now in order to stock pile draft picks. And he has yet to do it
