I would love to have Mingo (or even Jarvis Jones) now at #15.

Perfect situation for a promising rookie, if you want to mask some inexperience or even weaknesses.

There's not the same pressure of being THE guy that teams could focus on or gameplan against.

Brown right now, but SP has made it clear that Brown's injury history (more specifically, his gameday "availablity") is something he is looking to stabilize before going into battle next fall.

But OT, for the Saints, is way overrated. Drew Brees made Jamal Brown, Stinchcomb, Bushrod, & Strief look better than they were. The Saints' bread & butter is the guards & centers creating the wall of the pocket to step up into, usually after our OT's let their man get a bit too close to Brees.

OT can be addressed with a mid-round pick (as they have successfully done in the past), or even a relatively inexpensive vet OT like McKinnie, if Loomis can free some more money.

OT at #15 is not a priority but rather a luxury.

Unless I missing something, we are basically out of money to sign players. I thought McKinnie was looking like a strong possibility there for awhile...but now it seems we can sign folks but then rebid cuts will have to come around June 1.

I think LT is such an important piece of the team, even with a great pocket-manipulator like Brees, and our current situation makes me queasy at BEST

Strief was a 7th round pick.
Bushrod was a 4th round pick.
Stinchcomb was a 2nd round pick.
And the worst amongst them, was Haslett's Jamal Brown, a 1st round pick.

I'm not as confident in Charles Brown as some of the guys are here on ST. I get the same queasy feeling you do thinking about some of his bad plays early in his career. Good thing for all us, SP will definitely address the position. Question is: at what point? SP-era history tells us, if it's during the draft, it probably won't be the 1st round.

We need to quit doing this and get a quality LT. Why wager our future on some average LT when we can get a great one.

NFL draft buzz: 49ers, Dolphins looking to trade up?

Game changers, like Tavon Austin, could tempt teams such as the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings and pick-rich San Francisco 49ers, to trade up in next month's draft, Daniel Jeremiah says.

How does the Victor Butler signing shape our first round plans?

I don't think it changes much. He has a 2 yr contract, with a voidable 2nd year. If he reaches whatever allows him to void the 2nd year, they still need someone. If Jones or Mingo are there, I say they still take one.

Hopefully we trade back now

Everyone talks about trading back and aquiring more picks. That sounds great in theory until you realize about half the teams in the top 15 would like to trade back. In order trade back, you have to have someone willing to trade up to your spot. Just don't see it happening. Still think the Saints go BPA and hope that the BPA at #15 also matches a need position. However, I don't see the Saints reaching just to fill a spot at OLB/DE, LT or DB.

I think it pretty much means we wont draft an OLB.

my guess is a OT or DL. possibly a corner

We pretending Jr. Didn't sign?

Based on the contract it's obvious the FO has a lot of faith in him working out as a 3-4 OLB. But, in all honesty, if he's our best candidate to really take hold in the 3-4 we're really setting ourselves up for a lot of unknowns. I'd rather them draft OLB at 15 just like we did prior to this signing.

This 2 year deal with Bulter is really just a stepping stone contract. If he works out and does will in this position, he'll command more money in free agency. With younger players coming up in the ranks, this will give us the freedom to not have to pay a premium OLB what he's worth. At least not immediately.
