He has been one of the best right tackles in the league for the last three seasons. It is completely illogical to trade him for middling compensation, or bench him, and spend our top (unproven) pick on his replacement when he is more than serviceable right now.

Go ahead and explain how exactly he is going to play. He isn't moving to guard. Neither are Strief or Armstead. That is clear. CSP made that clear.

he was picked 3 hours ago. Anything Payton says at this point is coach speak.

Strief could get cut, Strief could move to guard, 64 could report as eligible, or Peat could, who knows yet. At worst maybe he sits a season, big deal.

Having 9 picks and a bunch of early picks gives us this luxury. fricking relax.

One would have to think with this pick they are going to move away from Strief this year. Payton isn't going to come out publicly and say that at this point though.

I truly think at the beginning of the season Peat and Armstead are going to be the two starting tackles with Strief pushed into a reserve role.

We have a ticking time bomb at QB. Time is not a luxury we have available to us. We need contributors right now.

If you listened to Payton's interview he talked about how after Scherf went off the board so quickly they had to rethink their plan. My take was they were attempting to trade up for Scherf and just couldn't get there in time. So plan B was the next best O.T. available. I'm sure there is a method to the madness.

Peat will contribute this year. To think otherwise, is ignorant.

This wasn't a sexy move, but will be a move eveyone is thankful for in 5 months.

Sure is. Do you know how many times Brees was sacked last year?....39. Worst in his career. What's doubtful is making it into the playoffs without your starting Q.B.

A fail...

Shut up dude, he hasn't even taken one NFL SNAP. Just because it's not some hyped name that you're supposedntonkikendoesjt mean he can't play. You can't draft your next qb if you don't have an o line that can protect him. We aren't even 24hours past the first round. Stop being such a bunch of whiny freaking falcons fans.

the most complete over reactionary thing all day. it isn't even training camp yet and you peg him as 0% chance of playing.

Almost all of those sacks came from the interior part of the line.

Strief allowed 3.

I don't see why this is difficult to understand. We do not need a tackle. If he plays, all that means is that we have Strief rotting on the bench. If he doesn't, we have a first round pick rotting on the bench. Makes 0 sense. Get a player we can use right now.

I think the truth is a little in the middle. Streif is not going to last much longer. You will need another tackle eventually. If Peat is your favorite guy on the board why not take him? You can cut Streif or trade him next year and then use the cap room you save on a FA. I don't think Peat makes us better this year, but he could make us better in the future. If you aren't in love with another player why pick them just because they are at a position of greater need?

I'm tending to lean towards this train of thought too. Not as far-winged as you but still same side. Unless Strief moves inside (which I don't think he is) I don't/and didn't understand this pick. I sat at the TV with a blank stare and said "okkk.." to myself.

I think Peat is a really really good prospect as a tackle but I just don't know where he'd play right now. And if he does play that means we have a more-than-capable OT sitting on the bench in either Strief or Armstead. I just don't get the logic of using 13 for a tackle. Taking an OT at some point in the draft, even at 75 or 78 I was all for, but 13? Idk. Especially with guys like Dupree and Parker still sitting on the board. Both of who are just as good prospects at higher areas of need IMO.

But I trust the Saints FO. If they feel like they needed to take Peat, and can make it work, I'll let them work it out.

Agreed. Lots of armchair GMs complaining that their mock drafts they read didn't come to fruition. If you think he's going to be a dominant left tackle for your future you absolutely grab him as a cornerstone. I was all about guys that can play early but dude looks like a major talent.

It will be nice for Brees to have a legit blue chipper at LT for his twilight years, and our next qb to have an established force protecting his blindside.
