Alejandro, here is a part of the actual transcript:
He's not trying to kill football. He's trying to change the culture of football.
quote:
Frankel: "Was there any discussion afterwards when the meeting was over and those players saw you? Did anybody say, 'Wow, that was kind of tough, Steve, I'm sorry you had to hear that?'"
Gleason: "No, the group I was with, no one seemed shocked."
Frankel: "No one seemed shocked to hear that come out of the coach's mouth?"
Gleason: "No, there was no discussion of, 'Wow, did we just hear that?'"
Frankel: "There was no discussion about that speech?"
Gleason: "No."
Frankel: "You're a bright guy. Do you think you had somehow been desensitized to the violence of the game?"
Gleason: "Wait. I'm not sure what you mean."
Frankel: "That because you played the game at the highest level, that maybe even you, given your condition, had become sort of numb to the idea that coaches were advocating to kill the head?"
Gleason: "No. What I'm saying is that I was with people that never played in the NFL and those people never said anything to me about them being shocked. That is all I am saying." (emphasis added.)
He's not trying to kill football. He's trying to change the culture of football.

I seriously dislike all these liberals who are trying to kill it.

He def. didn't mean what HBO was trying to imply. That is shitty on their part.
It seems they were even baiting him to get the answer they wanted to hear.
Scum.

No shite.
Talk about taking something out of context to fit your agenda.

In regards to DD, HBO wouldn't have changed his words for no reason.
They have him on record; it's not like they forgot what he said and had to paraphrase.
They made a conscious decision to publish something different.
Why?

Look, I love Gleason. I'm waiting for my No Flags shirt to arrive - it's taken ages.
But his quote (I quoted it earler) is that football "played within the rules" causes head injuries. I have a problem with that quote.
Football "played within the rules" heavily fines and penalizes for both shots TO the head and shots delivered WITH the head. Football "played within the rules" would rarely if ever allow for any contact with the most vulnerable areas of the head.
I am very against anybody (even Steve Gleason) who is hopping on this politically correct "I would have a hard time letting my kids play football" bandwagon (driven in large part by our good friend Sean Pamphilon). I worry for the future of the sport, and I think real football fans need to fight this thing before it becomes a runaway train.
If you have a problem with the safety of football than you should stop watching and supporting this barbaric sport. Otherwise stand up for one of the best things America has going for it and tell the nancies to STFU.
"I'm going to take advantage of vulnerable former NFL players to push an agenda that I have stumbled upon. Read up." - Sean Pamphilon

Dude, it's a fact that football players get ALS and ALS-like symptoms more often than others.
Isn't it possible to make the game safer without ruining it?

Professional football players? College football players? High school football players?
I have a rebuttal to each.
Please clarify and/or share a link.

One of the biggest factors is that head shots haven't been regulated and/or heavily penalized until recently.
If you compare practices of today to the grueling practices of the 60's 70's and 80's it's night and day. NFL players (and college) receive far less contact (probably about 33%) in a typical season today as they did back then.
Using 50 year old former NFL players is so fricked up and behind the times that it's virtually worthless. There is hardly any legitimate player "sample" that's relevant to the career of a present day NFL player. Even Junior Seau is a "bad sample" seeing as he came up before all these changes and precautions (no two a days, no helmet to helmet, etc).
Of course these doctors and former players aren't going to present that side because in this media-whorish culture, everybody is out to make a name or a buck for themselves.
I guess my argument is that the necessary changes are already being made, and that it's unfair to take a Junior Seau or Dave Duerson who both played the vast majority of their football lives prior to the recent safety changes, and use them as the samples. They are already outside the box.

Another question people should be asking:
Why did ESPN run with the story without calling Gleason first to confirm what he actually said?

I agree that the topic needed to be addressed (I argue it's already BEEN addressed by the NFL), I just fear that in today's hyper-sensitive, politically correct, and 24/7 need for news stories that we're going to kill tackle football.
A good comparison is that of global warming. Now you may believe in global warming - I may believe in global warming, but the fact is that there are entire billion dollar industries that have been severely hurt (and on the flip side - billion dollar industries that have been created) by something that hasn't been concretely accepted or proven to be caused by human beings. I worry that we could see similar harm caused to the NFL and/or NHL just because the spin cycle gets too intense and parents/lawyers say "no more".
