He's not being traded this year. Not sure why people are still holding on to their hope that we part ways with him. He likely isn't going anywhere next season either, unless something drastically changes.
For all the money we would eat, someone would have to give up a 1st. Do we really think some team will give up a 1st for Carr?

I don't see us going OT for second year in a row with top pick. We also aren't going to trade back.
I was debating that as well. But the top CB, Top DL, and Top Edge had come off the board before 9, so I traded back 2 and got someone still there had I picked at 9. I think we need a CB here, but everytime I have thought that in the past, They went DL or OL.

So you go from not being traded to someone needs to give up a 1?

I'm saying it's utterly ridiculous to think anyone will give up a 1st for Carr, so he will not be traded.

quote:not a 1st maybe, but how about a 2nd or 3rd and a player. If the Saints draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd round, I can definitely see it happening. Keep in mind, his cap hit doesn't change if we trade him. We just lose the opportunity to restructure him again next year.

I’d be thrilled if we got a 3rd.

If traded pre June 1st all of his bonus money immediately comes due on the cap and we go from our current 33 mil under to 25 mil over the cap, which means he is literally untradable until after June 1st.
So in addition to it being EXTREMELY unlikely anyone would even give us the comp for it to be worth taking a MASSIVELY HUGE loss in cap space either this year (pre June 1st) or next (post June 1st), I do not believe we can even clear near that much space if trying to trade him before this draft.
IF we were going to get rid of him this year, it would have been before we gave him another 17 mil in bonus money. Once we gave him that money he was never going to go anywhere this year, and still very unlikely next year unless something drastic changes.

unless there's a renegotiated contract between him and team correct?
Posted on 3/21/25 at 8:29 am to Chad504boy
quote:No that has zero effect on the bonus money we owe. Bonus money is already paid, by us, and just prorated out over X amount of years, so we are on the hook for all of the bonus money (unless it's something like an unearned roster bonus for next year, which he doesn't have one). So if he is gone from the team pre June 1st we immediately owe all of that bonus money on this year's cap.

Cap Calculator
Just play around with this and you can see what happens with his contract in different scenarios. Once he was given the 17 mil AND restructured, he was always going to stay this year, and made it VERY likely he would stay next year. The window to move on was before that, so Moore made the commitment to roll with Carr for 2 years.
While there is an out next year, it isn't fiscally responsible to cut Carr to only save 9.5 mil unless we have a QB we feel is our QB of the future, or something happens really bad with Carr this year.
Edit:
To add a little more to show how entrenched we are once we made the bonus/restructure decision, even if we do trade him post June 1st we only save 11.5 mil total vs just keeping him for 2 years (the 2 mil base this year and the 9.5 mil next year).
So whatever comp we get must be worth still paying Carr a shite ton of money, only saving 11.5 over 2 years of not having him, and we'd need a sure fire QB starter to even start to consider it (which would then be better to let him sit so he isn't forced in too early if we are talking a rookie).

Oh no, that 2028 cap situation is getting out of hand
I wonder if we see another uncapped year like we did back in 2010. Maybe they are planning this to be the time to say F* it and dump a bunch of contracts and just take the penalty/fine; then Loomis retires - he would be around 72.

They just don't estimate the cap that far out most of the time, which is why it's sitting at 0.
But unless we actually extend Carr and a few others it will be 2027 that will take on most of what you see listed for 2028. 2027 is the year we are currently setup to do a soft reset of things.

My comment was in jest from seeing that negative figure and the $0 for the team salary cap. I knew the CBA was expiring soon (2031) and when I saw no cap I assumed it was 2028.
Posted on 3/21/25 at 10:51 am to Weekend Warrior79
Yeah sorry for turning the reply so serious. xD
I figured it was probably a joke but then started going in on how we can kind of reset very soon, just like everyone wants.

quote:Sigh. I guess I should have specified post June 1, though I clearly stated it would most likely happen if the Saints drafted a QB early - so he'd be traded after the draft. Obviously any picks we get for Carr would be in 2026.

Thinking Riley would make a great Taysom replacement IF Kellen Moore wants to utilize that type of player. He may not.
