I was really happy with the deal. I had been a fan of Drew while he was at Purdue and SD. The summer before his first season with the Saints I had the opportunity to work out with Mike Schyfries(sp?) When I asked him about Drew he said "the Saints are getting a really good qb, a great leader, and an even better guy." From that moment on I was 100% sold on Brees.

we didn't have to waste it on some 50/50 quarterback who may or may not pan out.
When people in New Orleans complain about Reggie, I always wonder who from that draft (other than Mario Williams who obviously wasn't available) they would have preferred the Saints to have taken. As far as I know, none of those top 10 picks that year have turned into superstars. You may even be able to argue that Regie has been the most successful, other than Williams, in the top 10.

5. Green Bay - A.J. Hawk, LB Ohio State
6. San Francisco - Vernon Davis, TE Maryland
7. Oakland - Michael Huff, DB Texas
8. Buffalo - Donte Whitner, S Ohio State
9. Detroit - Ernie Sims, LB Florida State

i remember not wanting leinert at all. i never was interested in culpepper. i was very happy brees was signed.. but i did worry a little about coming off that injury.
i remember thinking we were going to draft vince young or aj hawk. this was before we signed brees.

I thought we were picking up a pennington type qb who would be solid not great

Aside from his on the field impact, Bush made an off the field impact unlike any other player in recent NFL history could have done.
The city of New Orleans and the Saints both needed that impact on the heels of Katrina.

First, I was elated that the Laughin AB era was finally ending not soon enough. I knew they either had to draft a first round QB or make a pickup. When it ended up being Brees I thought it was a great calculated risk. I didn't know he would turn into St. Breesus here but I did consider him a legit strong starting QB. Words I would have used then were gutsy, smart, overachieving. He was the antithesis of Brooks to me (gifted talents, bad decision maker, questionable heart as a leader). I was glad it was him over Culpepper cuz I view Culpepper similar to AB in some ways.

After Brooks, I would have been happy with a 3-legged dog as quarterback.
And Michael Vick had plenty of those available

I was pissed, I wanted Leinart over Brees when we didn't get the first pick and I thought we weren't going to be able to get Bush. I was wrong twice

There were legit questions about Brees health, however all he cost was money. I don't know the details of his first contract, but I don't remember it being a stupid/long deal, that would be an anchor if he didn't pan out or fully recover. A proven NFL starter >>>>>>>> A rookie.
I said at the time it was certainly worth the risk and as Troy Aikman said Sunday, it may have been the best free agent signing in NFL history.

I agree. Wish I had gotten season tickets too.

Hawk has been solid, if unspectaular. I think D'Brick has been aight. Bush has basically been the football equivilent of Dave Kingmon, he will hit some spectular home runs but hit .225 and strikeout too much.
