I've tried some draft threads before but since not picking until #89 and it becoming Bounty Talk they haven't got much traction.

Gonna try again by position since we're down to two weeks until the draft. Rather than try and hone down to most likely what i'm looking at here is who are the best at that position and could fall to be a BPA.

Team- Bunkley is on board for a while and Ellis is in the last year of his rookie deal. Ellis could extend and be more cap friendly if they like him. Still some chance they could even cut him for cap relief ($5.8mil). Tom Johnson played after being injured. He has potential to be more than a backup. Mitch King is a classic overachiever- not a bad roster filler but prolly not the future at the position. No indication that Rogers will be or if they want him back. Franklin appears to be gone.

This might be the deepest quality position in this draft. I have 3 DTs that they may not be able to pass on if still around at #89...

Alameda Ta'amu, Washington 6-3 337lbs
Looks more like a 3-4 NT to me but is on plenty of boards as a 4-3 guy. I rate him very unlikely to be around for the Saints but not to the degree it would be a shock if he was. The best rated DT I think we could hope for- and that contingent on him fitting Spags scheme.

Mike Martin, Michigan 6-2 304
Here's a guy that has a reasonable chance to be around for the Saints. His knock is that he is a little undersized. His plus is that he has excellent game tape, a high motor, and was a wrestler. Seems like the kind of player coaches like. I wouldn't be disappointed at all if they called his name.

Josh Chapman, Alabama
I rate him as even more of a 3-4 NT than Ta'amu. I put him at most likely of the three to be around at #89. He has some injury concerns also. If they see him as a fit here I could see it. If they passed I wouldn't blink over it either.

Whaddya think of these guys? Have any other DTs on your wish list for the 3rd Rd?

I put Brockers, Thompson, Still, Worthy, and Poe as all definitely gone by then.

If Rodgers wants to play I hope we keep him. Seemed to play stronger late in the year.

I just can't see paying Sed that much money but the call will be/has been made by Spags by now. Maybe a camp decision is what Spags is waiting on after seeing him work.

Martin of Michigan looks more of a fit and would not be a bad choice.

I am always a fan of having solid DTs to rotate throughout the game, i would not be disapointed if they get the michigan or the bama guy at all.

Derek Wolfe is one of my favorite potential picks in the 3rd round. 9.5 sacks, 19.5 tackles for loss with Cincinatti last season. I think he could instantly be our best pass rushing DT on 3rd down while we coach him up to be an all around good player, then let Ellis walk next season (unless he finally breaks out, which I doubt).

Wolfe looks good but I can't find rankings or projections of him that high. If you like him in the 3rd then you would love him in the 4th then, eh?

Kinda trying to develop a wish list of who might slip down to the Saints that we could be jizzed about.

I kinda like Mike Daniels from Iowa. I think he is more of a 4th or 5th round pick though. He is undersized, 6'0'' 290. He isn't considered a run stuffer but could produce a rush up the middle on passing downs. He finished with 9 sacks for Iowa last year, including 2 in the bowl game vs. Oklahoma. He was also a former HS wrestler like Mike Martin.

on my list too for later. Not so much who I'm expecting to be around here but trying to get a list of guys to be watching and hope they fall the Saints way for #89.

Sure, I think if we could go something like
Bentley or Ron Brooks
Wolfe
Streeter

in rounds 3-5, I would be ecstatic. I like Greer/PRob/Patrick, but we really need depth at CB in case one gets hurt considering how often opposing teams will have to pass the ball to keep up with us. I think DT is probably our biggest position of need (although we don't have any really good DEs, I think we do have depth), so Wolfe would be great, then Streeter would be a high upside project. I like Devery but with Colston and Moore locked up long term, I think he's expendable if you find a guy that can run a go route as well as him.

I've seen Billy Winn a DT from Boise St. projected as a third rounder a good bit. He's 6'3'' 294. Wasn't a workout warrior but is said to be effective when slanting, stunting and working the edge. He's also been tabbed a possible 4th round pick also though, isn't the strongest player. Mike Martin would be the guy I would like to see us take.

Doesnt seem like he'd be a bad choice. The size is a little nerve wracking, but I'll give our new DC benefit of the doubt till he proves me wrong.

yup, I have him tagged as a not surprising choice if there. Maybe not a screaming must pick selection but in that value range. The others are ones I have a little higher that might take a little luck to still be available.
