Worst Defense in the league last year. Holes everywhere.
And they signed 8 players with most of them going to be starters.

That's why I went with Tate. I can't imagine they want to go with Treylon Burks as a starter. That would give me nightmares.
They also did an interview with Adam Peters and he said they had a "highly successful" free agency so they can focus on BPA and I think in their eyes, a WR that can help Jayden Daniels would be the top of the list (besides Love since RB should be a big need too).

The Saints had 8 losses by 14 or less points for the 2025 season. And I think they go for a potential generational defensive talent with less "flaws" in Caleb Downs.

Lemon isn’t a “fit” for our needs at the moment.
he's absolutely a fit in the slot.
Agreed. But I think with Olave’s skill set we really need an X or someone who can play hit all the routes. That’s Tate, Boston, Bell, etc. That’s not Lemon or Conception.
I personally think Lemon might be the best WR in the draft, but our need pushes us towards Tate who isn’t that far behind him.
That being said, I wouldn’t be upset if we took Lemon. Or Tate. Or Downs. Or Delane. Or Ioane. Or Love. Or Mauigoa. Or Reese or Bailey. Or Styles.
Bain and Tyson are the only players I’d really be ehh about.

I’d hardly call taking the best receive in the draft when its arguably our biggest team need at a premium money position a “waste “
If you combine value wise, position wise, and need wise, you can make the deduction that drafting WR #8 is a possibly waste.
Its not arguably our biggest need. Its maybe at best 1 of 4 equal needs between CB/ DE/ OG/ WR. What you should say is that its unanimously our biggest want.
Lets be real, are we more confident that Kook Aid/ Riley are set at CB1/2 or that Olave/ Vele are more set at WR1-2 with Shough throwing to them and an upgraded OL?
If you are doubting our WRs at the very top then you are doubting Shough and our upgraded OL. If Shough didn't have multiple 300 yd games with scrubs and if we didn't upgrade one of the worst OL's in the NFL then I'd agree with y'all.
Those other moves directly impact the abilities of our WR's and we did several things that should positively impact the position. CB/ DE are left on an island and are reliant on themsleves. That's way more important to get the elite guy > WR.
That reasoning + the fact that a WR at #42 can be just as good is exactly why it can be viewed as a waste.

With commissioner approval I’m amending my pick to Tyson

Agree to disagree. I think it’s our biggest need but I threw in “arguably “ bc certainly you could argue that it’s another position and you wouldn’t necessarily be wrong (or right ) . I just saw what average wr2s go for in free agency (lookin at your Alec Pierce ) and I think it would be wise to take our best swing on shoring up the wr position via the draft .. our best swing would be using the 8 pick ..our defense wasn’t great but you could call it sneaky good last year vs the offense which really needs help/playmakers. Maybe you could get equal value in the second or third round but the same argument could be made for any position group. Alontae Taylor was probably not on anyone’s radar when we snagged him in the second round and he ended up being an absolute beast of a db. Again we could go a number of ways with 8 that would make sense but in my mind based on what I saw when I watched the sajnts last year WR would go a long way in making the team better and putting us in more positions to win football games.

I'm going to formally cast my vote for Caleb Downs.
It does not greatly excite me. Hearing mickey's comments yesterday sort of makes you want to eliminate bain based on outliers. Tyson has a bit of risk with injury history wanting to be "risk adverse at 8"
Saints are going to miss a ton of leadership on the defensive side of the ball. This void can start being replaced by Ellis in the LB group but Caleb Downs will have the opportunity to step in and be Staley's version of Derwin James and be a Joker type safety that can line up nearly anywhere needed on a play by play basis. One of the safer selections of the draft.

Tate at #8. Not who I want, but I think the Saints do.

Random thought of the thread. I’m convinced that a ton of ppl who really like Bain would not be interested at alll if he didnt have a cool Batman villain last name. Like if his name was Reuben Snodgrass or Reuben Tweedleberry I think they’d be like “nah his arms too short “.

It's official with the 8th pick of the NFL Draft, The New Orleans Saints select SAFETY CALEB DOWNS OHIO STATE in Tigerdroppings Saints Talk 2026 Mock Draft.
Caleb downs did play with Kool Aid in 2023. Coming from Olave's and Chase Young's Alma Mater. The Saints couldn't ask for a better fit and leader for this secondary moving forward.
Congratulations to all.

Think the Top 5 is locked, CLE goes WR/ OL, Commanders go Delane > Downs and we take whoever doesn't go between Delane/ Downs.
