The Orgeron Paradigm - hiring an assistant coach in an attempt to continue team continuity.

I'd like to see how many times that worked out vs how many times it blew up in the teams face.

There was a thread last year asking if this had ever worked before. It has and below are some of the successes. There are also some failures and I’d say it’s maybe somewhere around 50/50.

quote:

Marty Schottenheimer was defensive coordinator for Cleveland for five years before promotion to head coach where he went 44-27.

John Madden went from linebacker coach to head coach and has the highest winning percentage in the modern NFL.

George Seifert went from defensive coordinator to head coach and won two Super Bowls.

Mike Martz went from offensive coordinator to head coach, went 53-32 and went to a Super Bowl.

Bill Parcells went from defensive coordinator to head coach of the Giants and won two Super Bowls.

Dave Wannstedt went from defensive coordinator to head coach in Miami and went 42-31 with two playoff appearances.

Jim Caldwell was an assistant head coach & quarterback coach for the Colts, became head coach and went to a Super Bowl.

Art Shell went from offensive line coach to head coach and had five winning seasons.

I will say that I think hiring Dennis Allen was a lazy hire. I understood why they did it, but this season shows that Allen is a good coordinator and a bad head coach. No shame in that as there are plenty of those. Norv Turner, Wade Philips, etc.

My only issue now is why is he still head coach? We tried to maintain continuity, that was his job. He didn’t do it. We were one of the worst penalized and turnover probed teams, didn’t have a winning record and did worse than we have done in over a decade and a half. Why is he still here?

I appreciate the effort here, but Caldwell is the only guy listed as remotely successful in the last 30 years. Some data is no longer applicable over time and I’m def not using the names you gave in my determination of this topic in 2023

You ask for examples, and you get examples and this is your response???

Continuity is part of it sure. Remember, SP was not fired, he left. It's not a novel concept that when a coach leaves of his own free will, that the replacement is already on the staff.

Second, the league is full of HCs who were a failure their first time around but much more successful their second. Two immediate examples are the hoodie and Pete Carroll.

So I think given all of that, promoting Allen certainly made a lot of sense.

Look, it may turn out to be the wrong answer. That happens. But it was not irresponsible or insane for the promotion to have occured.

It sounded like a good idea at the time.

Yeah it makes sense on that level and the players seem to like him ok. From my view (which is far away) the team looked undisciplined and too passive…not motivated. I hope with a bit more health they can improve. However I doubt it. Hope im wrong.
