Dennis Allen finally made an aggressive coaching decision

Going for it on 4th and 1 in the opponents territory, with the game on the line, was an actually ballsy call. I fear that the fumble and failure to pick it up will cause him to coach even more conservatively in the future.

On a scale of "ballsy calls" that was about a -3. That was the only logical call. What was he going to do? Punt from the Atlanta 27? Kick a FG to keep it a one score game and run the (albeit small) risk of having it blocked or miss and give Atlanta the ball 7 yards further up? There were 12 seconds left on the clock and Atlanta had no TO's remaining. The Saints had to get less than a yard to end the game. It would have been FAR dumber not to go for it there.
The only reason it is discussed is because in 2022 Saints fashion, they fumbled the ball needed only 2 feet to win a game. If THAT causes Allen to coach more conservatively, then it will be #348 on the list of reasons he needs to be let go.

And the play call was actually great and it worked, but Peat decided to go block a DB who wasn't interested in hitting Taysom when the LB was right there and was the only one with a shot to stop him. Play call was good, Peat sucked.

I still think it’s the wrong call yesterday. If we were playing Tampa or Kansas City, maybe it’s the right call because Brady or Mahomes can execute a quick TD drive.
Against Atlanta, kick the FG and make their rookie QB drive it all the way down for a TD.
People keep saying we could have missed the kick and they would be in good position to turn around and make a kick to tie it. We could have also fumble the ball for a scoop and score. We could have gotten a long sack on a scramble that goes awry. All kinds of things could happen trying to run it as well.
Kick the FG, that’s more time off the clock. Squib kick which is more time off the clock. Give them the ball with just a few seconds left.

It was absolutely the right call. You need inches and the game is over. Too many things can go wrong on a FG. Even if you don't get it, you leave less than 10 seconds with no TOs to go 40 or so yards.

The same things can go wrong going for it. Like a fumble. A scoop and score. A penalty that takes you out of FG range. The FG at least gets you points.

Should have had Taysom roll out and throw the ball, it would have used up at least 5 more seconds.

They made the correct call. You can keep spinning around “what-ifs” all you want but they made the right call.
The chance of a scoop and score was INCREDIBLY low if you think about the positioning of the players and the fact that we had a RB standing in the backfield.
It also wasn’t “ballsy” by any stretch.

I’m saying the same thing on the what ifs. It’s likely we would have made a FG. Lutz is > 85% on FGs, Saints are second to last in the league in converting 2 point conversions at 33%.
Not to mention they had Taysom taking the ball from under center which he never does. Hence the fumbling issue. That just makes it more unlikely we convert.
I said it before, take more time off the clock by kicking the FG and force the rookie QB who has done nothing all game to make a TD. If it’s Mahomes or Brady, go for it. The falcons? Nahh.

There was a rule change several years ago that requires at least 4 or 5 seconds to run off during FG attempts. So missing the FG actually leaves less time than they had because the fumble only took off 3 seconds. I agree w another poster, should have let Taysom take the snap in shotgun, fake to AK and roll out. If it’s there, get the first. If not, throw it as far as you can downfield
