8 Sacks! 2 Turnovers!

Linebackers flying to the ball!

Lineman plugging running lanes!

What a world we live in!

Quick question. Was it just me or did we play a shite ton more man coverage last night?

They look good, but I'll wait till we actually play #1's before getting too 'cited.

That was our 1's on dline vs there 1's on oline.

We dominated that match-up. Excitement and optimism is warranted.

He did not. But he would have been pressured too. And his runningback would have still gotten stuffed behind the oline.

Our dline whipped their starting oline, thats a great sign.

No, Rivers sat out, but they gave reason to be optimistic regardless. They were playing with enthusiasm. They weren't out of position or looking lost. Tackling was sound. They were hitting hard and covering their assignments. So so far, they were looking much better than recent years.

I'm not trying to be Debbie downer or anything. I like the play so far. But ever since that pre-season game years ago when we straight up assaulted Alex Smith and the 49ers and had a few picks in the first half, then our defense would just as garbage as normal, I've learned to temper my pre-season hype.

New coaching staff makes me slightly more optimistic we'll actually see some consistent play, so crossing fingers.

That was 2011...when the Saints went on to go 13-3. The total defense that year wasn't great. However, the scoring defense was in the top 15. Either would be a HUGE improvement from the last few years.

I don't think anyone is saying based on 2 preseason games the Saints defense looks like the '85 Bears. But regardless of the competition, the defense has shown some signs of improvement. Even in the preseason over last few years the defense looked terrible.

I really want to see consistency. I know we're not going to see that '91 defense again, but even if we can sniff the '09 unit as far as turnovers, that's going to go a long ways.

I know I sound like a broken record, but it can't be stated enough how much of a strain the lack of turnovers over the years has put on the offense.

Both of SDs starting tackles didn't play. It neither did our best DE so it's almost a wash. They looked good actually playing the ball and tackling well. I'd like to see something similar in week 3 dress rehearsal before I feel it's something we can replicate in the regular season.

I'm not saying that we are champions already or anything. I'm simply pointing out improvements that I've been seeing. The players on all levels seems to be responding positively to the playbook and to the new positional coaches.

I'm with sicboy... having an elite QB on the field makes a difference. It's not just line against line, you've got a general standing behind them making things happen that his back ups just can't do.

That said, I'm encouraged by two games in a row of lights out play from the 1s.

I am very encouraged by LB play. Saints LB Corp and D line must pressure the QB. The secondary still looks weak.

San Diego is not the best team to gauge their play against, San Diego has it's issues and Rivers of course didn't play. But they did show improvement, I think Houston is a much better team than San Diego and it will be really good to gauge where their at against them.

They have nothing at QB either, so it'd be an incomplete assessment as well. At the very least, it would be promising if we continued to play this well on first team defense.

Next week we'll see our offense vs their talented defense at full, that may tell us how we will fare against quality defenses though. Can we run on them? Can we sustain a long drive?
