Comparing 2007 to 2009, wishing, hoping

There was much questioning before the 2009 season after coming off 7-9 & 8-8 seasons in Payton's second and third seasons. We've just seen two more 7-9 seasons in a row. What moves were made after 2008 that sparked the SB run? What similarities might we see today?

First I notice is free safety. Josh Bullocks and Kaesviharn were abysmal from '06-08. Signing Sharper improvement was expected but not without questions at age 33. Rotoworld said- Saints signed FS Darren Sharper, formerly of the Vikings.
Free safety has been a trouble area in New Orleans since Sean Payton took over as coach. It's just hard to imagine Sharper being the answer. There's a reason nobody else gave the 33-year-old a serious look and he's no longer a playmaker. Sharper brings some leadership, but coordinator Gregg Williams will have to generate more pass rush for this defense to truly improve.

Even until the draft the word was this- Darren Sharper's contract with the Saints is only for one year and has a max worth of $1.7 million.
Sharper is a good bet to make the Week 1 roster, but New Orleans has little tied up in him. He only got $200K to sign and can earn $500K in in-season bonuses. The Saints won't hesitate to draft a safety to start over him

We know the story. He came in and led the NFL with 9 picks, 376 return yards, and 3 of them for TDs. A Super Bowl winning season usually has a surprise signing or two like this.

Free safety again has been a huge hole with Byrd disappointing and seemingly endless injuries to Saints safeties. Byrd COULD bounceback to the form we expected. Von Bell or Erik Harris COULD prove to be the missing dynamic playmaker. Significant improvement here will be a vital key to 2016 success.

Maybe some parallels at CB too. Gay, Jason David, and a lot of injuries in 07-08. Signing Greer and drafting Porter dramatically improved play.

Again in 2015 a lot of injuries and a rookie that matured into a solid corner in one year. Bounceback of Lewis and if PJ Williams turns into a real deal could similarly radically improve this position instantly.

One more, Anthony Hargrove had been out of football a year was signed, came in strong, and produced 5 sacks and one game winning fumble return for a TD.

I submit that an even greater boost COULD occur from Nick Fairley.

Not every free agent produces as much as you might expect. For continued success ya gotta have as many that produce beyond your expectations though. Is this the year? Who else will be vital keys?

Mike Bell was a monster that year. And he was our 3rd RB. It was mainly cause of the play of our O-line with Goodwin, Evans and Nicks. We don't have nearly that good of a line, but our running game that year was tremendous and that was evident in the preseason game against the Texans that year.. Can Ingram and Hightower replicate that? Doubtful.

And Bobby McCray lining up opposite of Smith. Who's gonna line up opposite Jordan? Not Kikaha. Edebali? Gwachum? Not confident in our DE's

The offense was always on point from 2006-2009...The thing that made the difference was hiring Greg Williams who liked the get after the QB. We also had the perfect personnel on defense to fit that scheme with all of those takeaways that year.

2009, even in preseason, seemed like a team on a mission.

I disagree with any similarities. The 2009 team had tremendous veteran leadership and the team brought in the right pieces.

You say their was much questioning before the 2009 season. I covered the Saints that pre-season and I can tell you no one locally was questioning them, most media felt it was one of the most talented Saints rosters ever.

This team is nothing like the 2009 team. Doesn't mean they can't win or won't but it's a bad comparision IMO

Not so much a comparison of the squads but the idea that sometimes a roster move that was not foreseen as a game changer CAN be a game changer.

Sharper was a flyer see how he does deal not a big money we think he is the answer signing. Hargrove was out of the blue.

Looking at the moves this year and considering what similar surprises need to or could happen to similarly spark a big turnaround.
