They were one pick away from getting Mahomes and they did not trade up one to make sure that another team (Chiefs) trade in front.

Worst decision in a draft since taking Alex Molden Corner Back from Oregon not Eddie George RB from Ohio St in 1996.

that was bad, but it was worse, when dumb arse ditka, announced to the world, a full 3 months ahead of the draft, that he would give up every pick he had if thats what it took to get to move up to get williams

and what a surprise it was that after that, no team would accept anything less than every pick we had

I prefer the Patriots approach. They typically trade down and gain picks. Stockpile young players with cheap contracts.

The Bellichek approach doesn’t work for everyone. They actually miss on a lot of picks. Bellichek is very good at scheming around player weaknesses and optimizing their strengths. Also Tom Brady was a huge part of all their success over the last 20 years.

I would do that this year, time to blow it up and rebuild.

Very true, but it does up the odds by having more picks. Not sure if Loomis is a good enough evaluator of talent to pull it off.

Yes and no. Ups the odds of finding gems that out play their draft position and good role players but decreases the chances of finding bonafide studs. It is a good strategy for filling multiple positions of need. Not a good strategy for an already well rounded roster. Also Bellichek drafts players that he knows he can use well in his scheme. It is why they play well on the pats then leave for higher pay and bust. Bill knows how to use skill sets and hide weaknesses and knows what to look for to replace those positions. However he has tough time with offense skill positions. He has defense locked down though.

I agree. Saints will not find a franchise QB this time to focus on getting rid of Thomas and Kamara get what we can. Also will need to find Cam replacement on edge. Time for FULL REBUILD get trench guys and hopefully get Top pick next year for Williams.

The Chiefs traded up to get in front of the Saints. I seriously doubt Payton knew that before it happened and said Nah, we're good.

Dickhead Mahomes called the Chiefs and said "hey you better get in front of the Saints or I'm gonna end up in that hellhole"

The point you just made, OP, was the proof that I needed long ago to conclude that Sean Payton alone cannot build and sustain an NFL Roster like the great ones can.

The Saints weren’t a hellhole at that time!

If truly he did call the Chiefs, the reason was that he didn’t want to sit behind Brees for 2-3 years

He did call the chiefs and that is where he wanted to go. However, he wasn’t sure the saints was going to pick him. He knew that houston or Arizona was going to though which were picks 12 and 13. He told Andy that he would need to get ahead of pick 12 or he was gone

Did CSP sort of reveal to the world what his Draft intentions were towards Maholmes? Why would he do that?

If CSP did indeed reveal this information in some way that Maholmes knew that the Chiefs would have to move up in the Draft Order to pick #11, then he himself is responsible for missing out on Maholmes.

CSP violated a basic rule of warfare - never reveal your plan to the enemy. CSP allowed Maholmes and the Chiefs to take counter-steps to foil CSP.

Some say, "Maholmes never wanted to play for the Saints so he was never coming here". Well, this isn't College Football Recruiting where the kid picks his own team. If CSP were a better strategist, Maholmes would have had no idea of the Saints intentions.

That's my 2 cents.

I agree. The point I was trying to make was that I think Mahomes was trying to aid the chiefs in preventing himself from going to Houston or Arizona which were complete dumpster fires at that time rather than to avoid going to the saints. Chiefs had a pretty good team overall at that time so it was an attractive location

He didn't care to sit on the bench until Drew Brees retired, so, naturally he preferred KC to NOLA. However, had Payton played the game correctly, Patrick Mahomes would have had nothing concrete to tell the Chiefs about interest from the Saints.
