It's like Mickey just decided to start being a GM this year.

Hmm, I wonder if this is to accommodate Teo or if this is an indication that they've come to terms with Butler.

They still have more cap space incoming from the Byrd cut in June to help with rookie contracts

So the Saints still have an abundance of cap space...this could be interesting.

They had plenty room to sign Teo. They had room without doing this.

The only reason to do this is because a large move is coming.

So how much cap space is available now? how much is available after June 1st?

Vaccaro is due up. Think he gets a deal before the season?

There also isn't really a reason not to do it with cap rollover, but it sounds like we may be getting a #1 corner today

Or that we are doing a deal with Vaccaro?

Nah like I said when this was reported over a week ago this was likely an auto conversion written into the contract (so yeah this is VERY german).

We had about $15-16 mil in space and this puts us at about $19-20 mil (unless it was already counting but now I can't recall).

There's no move we could have made that we needed to do this for. We could sign Butler and extend Vaccaro (which might actually save cap) and still not have needed to do this.

That's why I believe it was an auto conversion.

i could be completely wrong, but i'm not sure auto-converting bonuses is legal.

Because no one is counting the $3.2 mil we save from Byrd now (I think everyone is confused and think we save nothing until June 1st). And I believe they didn't count the $1.7 mil saved from Cooks.

Though it depends on what Sterling Moore got as his numbers aren't in yet. I'm not expecting more than $1.5 mil but he was getting other offers.

It is and it happens every year. The player would just say yes anyway as they get that money upfront, and it's no different capwise from a manual conversion.

These things are written into the contract.

Can't we extend Vacarro and have the contract start next year with no effect on the current season?

Sure, but we'd probably save more giving him more money upfront as a signing bonus.
